What is best for killing all grass/weeds along fence line?

Starting to put alot of fencing up. Wondering how I am going to keep it neat looking without weedeating with a trimmer as a full time job. What are my options? Thanks.

One option would be one of the many brands of soil sterilizer for a more semi-permanent solution. Other options might be a propane weed burner or a few applications of glyphosate applied a few times per season.

Is seems no matter what we do mother nature seems persistent in reverting us back to her ways.

How about just plain old roundup, or one of the glyphosate copies?

I keep about 1500 feet of fence line clean. I have been using Roundup applying it about every 6 weeks with a sprayer that I have mounted on my four wheeler. There is a product call Hyvar which is a soil sterilizer. Do not spray this around trees, it will kill them, trust me. If you do not have trees along this fence line. It will keep it dead for long time. I will be using this product next year.

Spray or pour, an old time method used by my grandma. Any would work, get the cheap stuff! I have some fence lines I am going to use it on and will experiment as to how much dilution renders it ineffective. Don't know yet.

This is a 41% Glyphosphate (generic Roundup) which works really well and is about $45 per gallon. I use it in a hand-sprayer at 2.6oz per gallon and use it to treat most of my fence line. It will take out most all grasses and weeds. I keep several hand-sprayers around and mark which chemical I use in them and the ratio or amt of chemical to use each time. You can use any glyphosphate but calculate much you will mix up in each sprayer and then figure the number of sprayers that the bottle contains. Simple division will tell you which one is economical.

On the REALLY tough stuff I use Crossbow which is $200 per 2.5 gallons. This stuff practically melts sumac and takes a couple of weeks to kill poison ivy, but its really expensive because it is selective for grass. I wanted this stuff to be able to spray on my brushy areas up front that I am trying to get Tall Grass Fescue and Burmuda to grow in. Its a slow kill but **** it works a long time. This is the only thing that I will put in my ATV sprayer. I'm afraid if I put anything that will kill grass in the big sprayer that I might accidentally get my yard with it. Yes, I do rinse out the big sprayer with a chemical rinse but I'm still cautious!

I have been using a non selective weed killer from Chemsearch at work for a couple yrs now. I am paying 22.50 per gallon, comes in a 2.5 gallon jug premixed, just pour in a sprayer and go. Has been very good, kills johnson grass and all the other weeds we have. I do have to respray every 2 months or so.I cant remember the name, but its something Maxx. I'll post the name tomorrow after i get to work.

I tried the ortho, but it did not kill the Johnson grass.It did kill the weeds growing up in the concrete seams around the buildings but not for a year, more like a couple months for me. I would love to find a weed killer I only need to apply once a yr.

Vinegar is way more expensive than generic glyphosate.... which I can mix up for $.25/gallon and is probably a lot more effective. Vinegar is nice if you want to be organic though.



Be aware that once you spray your fence lines you will always have to spray them... weeds will be the first/only thing that comes back.

Where do you buy glysophate? How do you mix it?

An over application of nitrogen fertilizer or lime should also work.

I have tried Burnout II(citric acid, vinegar, clove oil mix) and worked well and shows instant results. Caveat is you need to reapply periodically, needs to be warm outside, and it is pricey if you have along fenceline to do. I used this for a hillside re-landscaping project at an organic community garden and it worked well. I went this way because it is organic certified and that I've seen environmental studies that are showing longer halflives for Round Up than was previously disclosed. Since I have several long rock walls I'm going to try something a bit different which is to take out invasive plants in and around walls and replace with fast growing, short wildflower mix. This Fall I will test a short wall section to make sure this works.

Stringer - Forgot to mention that if the fenceline is off ground level, except for posts, you can also do a mechanical elimination of green material by using an attachment that uses a blade to undercut roots. These devices have simple sensory wands that pull back the blade when a post is reached. Vineyardists use this on tractors to keep vineyard rows clean of competing grasses/weeds. Pros - no chemicals, fast to complete task, and you're on the tractor. Cons - Pricey
