Tank mix Surflan with the glysophate to get longer control of grasses.

Vinegar is way more expensive than generic glyphosate.... which I can mix up for $.25/gallon and is probably a lot more effective. Vinegar is nice if you want to be organic though.

Be aware that once you spray your fence lines you will always have to spray them... weeds will be the first/only thing that comes back.

Where do you buy glysophate? How do you mix it?

I buy it at my local farm & garden type store in 2.5 gallon containers. Can also get it in 1/2 or full gallons I believe. Generic 'roundup' (glyphosate) concentrate is what you want, gets sold under many brands. I mix my glyphosate at 2oz/gallon of water.

I have Mallow which is naturally glyphosate resistant so for 'kill all' (driveways, fences, etc.) I also mix 2,4,d at 1.5oz/gallon with the glyphosate.

On the REALLY tough stuff I use Crossbow which is $200 per 2.5 gallons. This stuff practically melts sumac and takes a couple of weeks to kill poison ivy, but its really expensive because it is selective for grass. I wanted this stuff to be able to spray on my brushy areas up front that I am trying to get Tall Grass Fescue and Burmuda to grow in. Its a slow kill but **** it works a long time. [/QUOTE]

Crossbow will kill poison ivy, but not grass? I've heard anything that kills poison ivy will kill everything. I'm trying to get my KY31 established on a few acres that has a fair amount of poison ivy that keeps coming back. Any suggestions for amount to mix? You've got me really excited here since I've had 5 shots of cortisone in the last year and a half to clear up poison ivy. I get it just from mowing sometimes. I've tried several things, but it comes back faster than I can keep on top of it and it's too hard to selectively get rid of.

Yea, Crossbow is selective for grass. Here is the link to the Dow Chemical site, who makes Crossbow. The 2,4-D is a broadleaf weed killer and the Triclopyr is the woody brush killer. But remember that Johnson grass wont be killed. It turns a milky white when applied so you can tell where you've been.

I bought some of the Pramitol after the manager of Tractor Supply said thats what he has his guys spray out in the yard. He said it takes a while to see the results so I used it on the sides of my gravel driveway up by the house and I thought it was CRAP! I waited 8-10 weeks, most of last summer and still no result. I took the remainder back up to TSC and talked with the manager again who remembered me thankgoodness. I asked to pro-rate the returned amount towards the purchase of something else and then I picked up the glyphosphate 41% concentrate. I got results from my glyph. mixture within 3 days! :) I think I had to use more of the Pramitol which turned out being more expensive in the end.

I don't know; you can do the math, but I think I will do one or two more applications with it if I can see the burn within 3 days. I also spray a ring around my trees in the yard to prevent having to string trim as often. I think it does a man good to walk his driveway and fence-line regularly. You can see potential problems before they occur and check your property!

I've heard anything that kills poison ivy will kill everything. .
Razor ( Glyphosate ) will kill poison ivy without necessarily killing everything else. We have many weeds and plants in S. Florida that you can spray right over with no affect. Glyphosate will kill most grasses. I use Razor first and then 2 weeks later hit what's left with Rely. Rely is glufosinate-ammonium. Results in just about 100% kill. Chemicals that translocate like Glyphosate need to be applied first to allow it to get to the roots. Rely is a desiccation type chemical that kills from the top.

The stuff I am using is called Trailblazer Maxx RTU from Cheam search. Works great IMO, but its a premix.
I got into a conversation at work with a co-worker today, turns out he has some property and sprays for weeds.
He is mixing the glysophate at 2% in a 25 gallon sprayer and putting in a small bottle of Dawn Dish Soap into the mix, says it makes it stick the weeds better for a better kill.
Thoughts?

Some herbicides may already have a surfactant or otherwise don't need it or are not compatible. The label should have info about it. I don't use a surfactant with glyphosate but I do with 2,4,d when spraying certain weeds.

Red Clover in particular seems to need the surfactant to get good contact. The 'hair' on the leaves causes the spray to 'bead up' versus spreading out. I happen to have a jug of Activator 90 which is a non-ionic surfactant (alcohol and/or fatty acids) so that is what I use. 'Crop Oil' is a common non-ionic.

I am looking at keeping weeds off of a road and it really burns me up that all of the chemical solutions are so much cheaper than the organic. Not only don't I want to support monsanto, I always feel like the overburden of this stuff will come back to haunt us some day especially with well water nearby.

I may go the route of some organic combined with a box blade.

Glyphosate (active ingredient in Roundup but available in cheaper generics now) is probably the safest, because any excess that runs off gets complexed (chemically tied up) in the soil. Use it as long as you don't have trees in the fence line or discontinue up to and after the drip line.
