Welllllll a steer is what you might call a "Broken" bull, ie: he is missing certain critical parts of his reproductive system that might "steer" him to chase the ladies.

I am told that if he has figured out how things work down there, "breaking" him (short of pulling a Lorena Bobbit) will not change his behavior being as he will have no way of knowing that he is now broken.

Welllll... gotta be specific re what behavior... if a critter has learned to jump fences...the knowledge is not centered in the gonads, thus remains when they are gone:D

If critter has learned to jump cattle guard or slip thru a hole in the fence, memory is not removed with the mountain oysters:laughing:

Now, desire, hmm... if time of operation is pre puberty, then it doesn't develop. If done as a mature animal, well, it'll drop off in a short while.

Said another way... when DESIRE is reduced/lost, although the ability to cross fence boundaries remains, the interest in doing so drops. Also, interest in the opposite sex is also extremely reduced.

supporting studies/info are here and here.

Kinda cuts into the breeding program though.:D

We got rid of both of our bulls last year and it has only taken one season of trying stud service to be looking at getting a bull back on the farm.

Stud service...dunno if you mean haul the cow to the bull when she's ready, or AI. Either way, neither can beat a bull, any working bull, for knowing when and how to get the job done:thumbsup: BTDT

Trying to haul cow and calf, combined with timing and still trying to work with my calf from the previous years breeding. I like getting a lot of hands on time with my calves. Makes them a lot easier to work with when they're older. My 16 month old from last year, I can halter and just pick up and trim her hooves as needed. Much easier than trying to fight them.

texasjohn I got another question kinda off topic but can you give me an idea on the cost of what a heifer would run.and do you raise just herefords?up here where I live you don't see many herefords.I asked my neighabor who runs a cattle ranch and he said faceflys seem to hone in on herefords more than angus. russ
