Well... just returned from 45th high school reunion, so the cattle guard has been blocked for the last 4 days with a cattle panel. So... I'm sure you're all on the edge of your chairs. Our bull has remained where he belongs. Not proof positive yet he was getting through that way and we need a little more time, but at least suggests so far that's where he might be getting through (of course it might also be nobody else is in heat again or he covered them). Will report back again in a week.

Assuming it was walking between the cattle guard pipes (SURELY not ON them- even I have trouble doing that) I still haven't heard any solution (like laying rebar between the pipes which would be springy on his hooves and maybe he wouldn't trust it). The pit is about a foot deep and I'm afraid if I dug it any deeper if he's walking between the pipes that he might break a foreleg between the pipes.

MMagis- I don't want him on the other side because I've got three yearlings over there which are too young to breed yet. Lordy I hope that didn't already happen.

Russ- I really am enjoying the mini Herefords for several reasons. They're only 36-42 inches, max out at around 600-650 so they are easier on fences and don't eat as much (a real problem with our Central Texas droughts when round bales can go for $100+) so I can have more of them, are really gentle, and though semi-pets we will butcher them though they don't know this yet. Lotta fun (except when they jump fences or somehow get over cattle guards).

TexasJohn- great idea on Wild Cattle Tales thread, maybe this will morph into it or you're welcome to start it.

Thanks again for all your interest. Its been fun reading !

i have laid round fence posts out to prevent cattle and horses from taking a specific path. of course you will need to stake the for and aft ones in plae with rebar or wood stakes (preferably ).. but leave the fence posts in between loose.. put this before the gap... he won't like walking thru.
