My Real Cowgirl

My dad has always said that you're not a real cowboy until you get bucked off a horse.

My 8-year-old has been in 4H this year, and she showed her horse at the fair Saturday. Now that the show is over I've told her we can ride and do whatever she wants rather than practice for show. We were playing tag yesterday when somehow her foot slipped out of the stirrup at the same time the horse spooked. In short, she was thrown in a cloud of dust.

After a brief conversation to check that she wasn't seriously hurt, she breaks out in a big grin revealing all the dirt and debris in her teeth. "Am I a real Cowgirl now?" she asked.

That's MY cowgirl!

After running horse shows for over 20 years it still amazes me how people can get thrown from a running horse and not get injured as I have seen over a hundred times.

I have only personally seen a couple of injuries occur and these were when the person stayed on the horse and their legs hit the railings or a barrel.

I never did the shows, but I've had a few good bang-up wrecks that I walked away from unscathed. Falling off is easy. Once you've done it a few times you realize it's not such a big deal and you stop worrying about it.

Good to hear she handled it well! Tell her she's joined the ranks of many a crazy folk who take a fall and keep ridin'.

I've got a handful of the crazy snorts myself and I look at it like this...they're an accident waiting to happen. Just try to be ready. I've yet to find that "bomb proof" horse.:thumbsup:
