10 cyl gasser question and 7.3l question

My V-10 has 3.50 gears and a 5 speed NV4500 transmission. It is geared and powered to match perfectly. The larger 8.0 liter engine is why Dodge was able to run a higher gear ratio than Ford.

My V-8 truck has 3.50 gears and the same 5 speed it will get 15-17 mpg compared to the 10-12 mpg of the V-10. The power is less than half, so the V-10 is actually the better value if you look at it like that.

I've got an '88 E350 7.3L MaxiVan, with a conversion Hitop (think air drag big time). Over the past 190.000 (?) miles it's gotten about 16mpg, except when I towed the tractor and trailer combo in my sig, then it dropped to about 12mpg. When I first got it before I had the the Hitop put on I got about 20 on a trip.

Other than minor things like brakes, wipers, fluids, shocks, tires, filters etc I've had to replace the glo plugs, the muffler/tailpipe (lasted 20 years), the water pump, and all the belts.

With relative ease I can pull out the two custom bench seats and load 12' lumber to fill the box. Or convert it to a camper. A couple of years ago Home Depot had a ridiculous clearance sale on doors, first come, first served, cash and carry. I filled the van and it took me about a year to unload :)

Only problems are A/C - designed to leak Freon, and it starts vibrating in the rear at about 85mph.

Dodge only made around 500 of the 2003 V10's before they pulled the motor from production. I have a 2003 Quad Cab Laramie 4X4 2500 which because of options is one of only around 25 made. Mine has the 4:10 limited slip and is utilized exclusively for towing now days (only 51K on odometer). Heading to KY labor day with tractor and quads on gooseneck trailer. Great towing machine. 12 to 14 MPG hwy no tow, 8 to 10 towing. Spark plug and plug wires need to be changed out at 2/3 the recommended interval IMO. Older units pay special attention to plug wire routing so as not to misfire. Can Google for more info. on this. Great machine will have for many years more. Mine is rated for 12,400 towing.
Synthetic fluids all around also highly recommended.

I have a 2009 F350 w/ V10 w/ 4:10's. Actually fun to tow things with. Great acceleration and I got a high of 14.5 MPG highway empty. Pulling the load pictured.. Quad in back, augers, chainsaws and Grand L3130 on trailer w. bucket loaded w, metal and chains, 1200 lbs rimguard in rears, hinged back box scraper with xtra 150 pounds of weight and tractor weights on brushguard I got 8.2 on a 60 mile trip..

Yes there was. Just not as a Superduty. ;)

Yep, the light duty F250, gas only. It looks like an F150 that someone stuck the wrong badges on.

I've owned two 7.3 diesels and worked on a couple of Ford V10s. The biggest problem the V10 had, reliability wise, was the coil packs. I replaced several of them. Likewise, for a long time the 7.3 was known for a bad CPS. Ford finally issued a recall a couple of years ago, the recall supplied part seems to have fixed it. Last I priced them, the post recall part from a Ford dealer was about 30.00, and the generic parts store replacement was still $100.00+.

I'm shopping for my 3rd 7.3 truck right now.

I've got a buddy that just ordered a 2011 ford 350 w/ diesel. Great torque but what about mileage when it keeps going into the regen mode when city driving?? The new crap they keep putting on these diesels is really trashing the MPG. Can't get a V10 anymore unless you buy a F450 or bigger. He always had a new V10 every 2 yrs and stayed w/ the F350 but w/ a diesel for 9 grand more.... Hard to justify 2 me unless you put 50K or more on a yr. Can't beat the older ones though..

You are correct, I should have said there was no 1998 Superduty, or 1998 F350.

I forgot about those wacky 7 lug light duty F250s....
