Mystery of the Flying Walenda/Houdini Bull

All bulls need to be respected. But, for a few reasons, dairy bulls in general can be the worst. Many are bottle fed and don't have respect for human authority, and many get extremely large. That being said, even a mini bull will hurt you.

My daughter when she was about 7 on the Dexter bull we used to have.

Sorry about it being so small.:(

In the late '40s and early '50s my Dad's best friend was "herdsman" for a guernsey dairy in Dallas. He worked nothing but guernsey dairies all his life, except for his time in the SeaBees during WWII. He alway said a bull wouldn't hurt you as long as you kept looking at him. I never believed it, but one day down in south Texas, near the border, he was leading a big bull they were buyiny to a loading ramp, he said he turned to see how close he was, and the bull got him. He was in the hospital a long time, had to be airlifted back to Dallas to another hospital, and in a hospital bed at home for a long time after that, and never fully recovered.

Chris, our youngest daughter always loved all kinds of animals. She was about 5 years old when we were with a group visiting the YO Ranch in Texas and the game manager took a bunch of us out on the ranch in an old schoolbus that they had. He slowly drove right into a big herd of longhorns while telling us that "you've seen this herd being chased around in some movies." He stopped in the herd and asked if anyone wanted to get out and pet them. Eveyone was "Ohhhh, nooo" except our 5 year old and she wanted to get out there and pet them. The guy said, "Oh, I wasn't kidding, they're all very gentle; just watch their heads when you stand close to one because she might turn her head to look at you and accidentally knock you down." So most of us got off the bus and petted the longhorns.

When I was a kid, my Dad would not allow me to show fear to any animal, horse, cow, roosters, dogs, etc., except bulls. He said to stay away from them because they'll kill you. And that was even before his friend got torn up so bad by a bull.

May I respectfully suggest that it is best to not get between a new momma cow and her 1 to 2 day old baby calf.... calf can blunder around and into you and momma cow can misunderstand the situation and take you out. Not all will be extremely protective, but in my experience a cow is more dangerous than a bull, particlarly with a very baby calf.

ANY dairy bull is far more dangerous, in my opinion, than a typical beef breed bull.

When are those steaks gonna be ready? My dad always said, "when you have one that gets out all the time, either eat it or sell it". They seem to teach others how to get past/over/around fences... We had mixed breeds and every few years would have to sell or butcher a fence problem.

This problem was not so much about getting out, as it is about getting in....

That's the great thing about raising beef cattle...

...any one which doesn't fit in to your breeding program, still fits into the beef program.
