After reading on in the JD thread I linked to, the owner reported all friction disc's were glazed.

I guess I now have an answer as to whether you can glaze wet brakes, or not.

If the brakes are barely adequate, as some are saying, this certainly could be a factor that might move them into the inadequate category.

When you guys did your 50 hr, did you clean the strainer too? The one that you have to take off the wheel to get to.

I cleaned the strainer. Just a bit of soft, rtv like material on the screen. It is not necessary to remove the rear wheel to take out the screen. It will pull straight out and go inside the wheel rim. You can then pivot the screen and get it out and clean it.

good point.

i wonder if this is a commonly outsourced component that might be shared by different manufacturers, or whether these rear diff/brake assemblies are all unique in house designs?

Yes, I did. And I do believe that it will hold even on the steep hill that my other one left me on. But, I will not try.......... yet.:D

Was going over the tractor before my first use. And, much to my surprise, the hydro fluid was not in the window, unless it is running. And the antifreeze is low. Other than that, the only other thing I found was the main BH swing cylinder was not greased at all.. I will go and buy some Permatran III tomarrow for the busy weekend ahead:thumbsup:.

Some things never change.

I would be willing to bet that is the most missed grease fitting. Yes, they missed it on mine too, along with about 6 other things.

How many years now have they been making these, and we still can't expect the dealer to prep it properly. :smiley_aafz:

There is only one reason left to explain it :anyone:

Hey Wacky, Yes, I cleaned the strainer by removing the wheel with an air impact wrench. Your other post regarding grease fittings that were not greased, yes, I found 4 throughout the tractor, and also the drivelines for the brush hog and snow blower were not greased,. These types of items and others lead me to the decision that I will do my own tractor servicing,. KC

Ray, I can think of more than one...but, I think apathy on the part of the dealer sums it up. Of course, the dealer would explain it as overworked, lack of staff, backlog, etc. Ultimately, there's just no pride of workmanship anymore...no attention to detail or some of the "little things" that keep a customer coming back. It is surprising in today's environment just how little it actually takes from a business to make a customer happy. Folks have gotten so use to substandard service and work performance that the least little "extra" makes them feel special. I just completed a $52K rotisserrie resto on a 1970 Mach 1 Mustang...that's an upper mid range price for a total resto on one of these cars. When it was complete, it was gone over with a fine tooth comb and when it was presented to the client it had our standard delivery gift pack: a t-shirt (promoting my business), coffee mug, keychain, ball cap and a complete Meguiar's detailing kit...he made more fuss over the "free" goodies than the car. It takes so little in these "pump your own gas & bag your own groceries" times to make someone feel they received personalized service. Your thoughts?

I no longer have the patience to work on the same car for that long. Or, deal with the "You have to have red oxide primer over spray on the floor, 12" in, on both sides, or they deduct points", nonsense. :confused2:

My first car was a 1970 mustang grandee, in grabber green. Even with a 2 bbl. it only got about 10 mpg.
