Replacement 10HP diesel engine (china replica)

Diesel is 1/2 the price for fuel (Off road), runs for twice as long for 1/2 as much fuel and has more torque. I run my screen all day on less than 2 gallons of fuel. Gas engine would never do that and would cost me more for fuel.

If you need an engine that is going to run long-term, diesel is the way to go.

There's a reason why there is no new tractors being made with gas engines.;)

I love the Chinese clones. We have used many of these to re-power pumps that had Hondas and also Go-Carts that had B/S engines. We have not had one single failure. I would only imagine the diesel would be just as good.

Here is the kicker I can see. First, does the diesel run at the same RPM as a gas engine because that is what the pumps are designed for. Second, is it may be a bear to start in the fall and winter in Ohio. Third is the cost. I have a 3 point splitter but can split a truck load of wood in about 1 hour. I think it would take you a lifetime to save enough fuel on the diesel unit to pay off. You can get the HF 6.5HP engine right now for $119 on sale.

I've seen some Subaru gas horz. shaft engines on sale at HF for what seemed like a good price. Don't know the hp, though. I think they have a small diesel, too, but I could be hazy on that. Easy enough to return, if you have one close by.

At work we have a couple of thousand Yanmar motorized generators and a couple of hundred Chinese knockoffs. We are still leaning towards the Yanmar because we see less problems with them.

The knockoffs for the most part perform very well, but their fuel consumption is a bit higher which leads us to believe the tolerances are not a tight.

For a log splitter, the knockoff would seem to be the way to go if you want to go diesel though (since this is not a mission critical operation)

If both are properly maintained, the Diesel will likely last as long as three Gas engines. My 12 HP kubota is now 25 years old and while I have only had it for 8 years, I suspect it is running as good as the day it was new. For example my 25 year old gas snow blower is on its second engine and it probably has 1/10 the hours. But I am with you, I might verywell buy the gas engine too for that price.

Got my curiosity up now, what type of work ?

The portable generators we use during large scale power outages (hurricanes / ice storms etc) to maintain systems use these types of motors

Any time you have a fiber optic (glass) cable feeding something (subdivision, business, cell site), you need a computer to translate the flashing laser light back into an electrical signal. Computers need power so when commercial power drops, we need to place a generator at each one of these (potentially thousands) of sites because the batteries will only last a half day or so

Chris,
When I'm home from work, my barrel stove in the barn is keeping the chill off 24 hours a day. I'm not worried about pay off, I'll burn off road diesel in it. I have a 6.5 and an 11 HP from harbor freight that I have on the Dayton Ohio Craigslist. Both are brand new but the 6.5 is underkill for my 16 GPM pump and the 11 is overkill...more overkill than a 10hp diesel would be.

Thanks for all the advice folks.

I have the same engine on a generator. It was used 18hrs a day for a summer, only problem was that as a diesel it vibrated a lot and loosened off the electric starter bolts enough that starter fell off. It also was not quiet, very happy with it though.

Does anyone know where I could buy a used yanmar 10hp diesel at? Ironically ebay doesnt have any and my google search for craigslist didn't turn any up.

I've gotten the impression from a few youtube videos and TBN posts that I should change the oil after running it for a little while to get the metal shavings out.

I was mainly wondering what a used Yanmar would cost compared to the $600 new price from carroll stream.
