35, 135 exhaust

I have decided to buy an older Massey, 35, 135, 50, 150. I have seen some with exhaust sticking up beside the hood, and running underneath the tractor. What was original, different for year and model? Is this something that is changed often and easily? I am new at tractors, thanks. Also, I have read perkins are the best engine, probaly a diesel with power steering and no multi-power trans,.....anything else??

I'm not an expert but I did own a 1964 MF135 Diesel for 25 years. Mine had the exhaust running under the tractor. Much better for mowing around trees. I have seen them both ways. Exhaust vertical or under the tractor. I can attest to the Perkins engines. The Perkins diesel I had in my MF135 and the Perkins gas I had in an Oliver OC-3 track loader were as fine an engine as I have ever owned.

For what it's worth, I have a '68 MF 135 Continental gas 4 cylinder that has worked like a charm most of it's life- use it to cut about 5 acres with a finishing mower, pull stumps, plow small garden track, etc. I've replaced my exhaust once (my exhaust runs underneath the foot well out the back). Currently working on fixing a power loss problem (gas line, possibly oil pressure, maybe rings or engine rebuild)) once it warms up.

When I sold my 1964 MF135 with the Perkins diesel it had 5,000 hours on it. 3,500 hours were mine. It would still start, sitting outside all winter, in sub-zero weather, in a half crank of the motor. No glow plugs and no block heater. They just don't make them like this anymore. I had zero issues with this Perkins diesel motor in the 3,500 hours I put on it.

thanks all, if I found one with an exhaust sticking up, is it fairly easy and to convert to underneath? (for cutting around trees)

My 1964 Massey 135 diesel deluxe with multipower came with the muffler/pipe down low since this particular 135 was configured for orchard work (don't want a hot exhaust pipe in the low hanging branches). I bought a U-pipe and converted it to vertical for used in my hayfield. It's an easy change, provided the threads in the manifold are good.

My MF fat book shows both vertical and horizontal setups on factory tractors.
