I was able to get a manual for it and it states it needs 1000rpm on the PTO to mow properly. My tractor only has 540.

Do they make a PTO speed doubler?

Or should I sell this flail mower and look for something else?

The Mott mowers are designed to be operated at a speed of 2100 RPM when using the tractor power take-off speed of 540 RPM. The PTO speed has to be kept up.

Which Mott mower? Pretty sure mine is a J60, and in the manual it states to be used with a 1000rpm PTO speed.

Is it possible I have mis-identified the mower and it could operate with the 540 pto speed?

post a picture of the mower, all mott and alamo mowers have ID numbers, look on the gear box for numbers, go to montage or flailmaster websites, or call them, far as I know mott and alamo mowers are 540

I would bet its the rotor speed they are mentioning as a fuction of the PTO speed.

the rotor will spin at 100 miles an hour which is 24 revolutions per second
at the 2100 RPM rotor speed -if my math is close to right

The 1,000 rpm PTO splines are a very small cut and have many more teeth

If the male spline which exits the gearbox has larger teeth it is a 540 RPM PTO.

You can obtain male female spline adapters to convert the 540 RPM spline on the tractor to 1,000 rpm on the implement with no monkey business.

I would like to see the spline exiting the gearbox but I am sure it is a 540 RPM mower.

The spline coming out of the gearbox is indeed a smaller spline with many more teeth. It is NOT like the spline on my tractor's PTO. I am 100% positive this mower is meant to run on a tractor with 1000rpm on the pto. I have the manual, it states it in there. Someone else sent me a manual for a Mott flail mower that runs on 540rpm, but it has a completely different gear box.

Oops, yours is a J60...I had assumed that it was a a 60 or 72. The small square gearbox identifies it.
The gearbox on the J60 is rated at 25hp. with a minimum input speed of 1000RPM. The tractors that it was designed for have both 540 and 1000RPM PTO speed. The mower should always be operated at 1000RPM. That's why the tractor end yoke is 1"x15spline.

yes not a mott

Yes, it is a Mott, I have the manual for the J60 "Hammerknife" and it matches exactly. Flailmaster.com has identified it from the pictures.
