JD 870
Okay Deere fans I've searched through a lot of your purchasing threads and didn't find anything on an 870. I'm lookin at a '96 with the 440 loader, forks, and a 60" brush hog with 146.5 hours for $12,000. Yes I checked the meter and no it hadn't turned over that's the original time. It's from a dealer and they swear the guys had it garaged except for a few times a year. Unless they repainted it and put all the new original stickers on it I'm inclined to believe them. Original price on it was $14,000 in '96 so I'm thinking it's high now at $12,000 any thoughts????? Thanks. :)7

Nice tractor, the 870. About the same HP (engine and PTO) as the 790 on a more robust frame/driveline. More similar to the 990/4005 than the 790 though. You don't see them for sale too often.
IIRC, they have a 3 range gear transmission with synchronized gears (but that may have been an optional transmission).
As far as price, somewhere betwen $10K and $12K (at least, that's the range of asking prices I've seen).
I suggest you offer $10K, if you're serious...then work out a final price from there.
Good luck!

If the synchronized gears were an option then it came on this one that was one of the selling points they brought up.

The synchro gears were included with the optional MFWD, but were otherwise available separately as an option. Power steering was also an option. Does it have MFWD and PS? BTW, agree with Roy it is a nice tractor.

It is a 4x4 and I'm new to all this tractor stuff but I believe the salesman said it was not a collar shift? He said it can be shifted on the go without stopping as opposed to some of the other models they have. So whichever transmission that is that's what it has.

870's sell pretty quickly, as do the 970's. Good, solid tractor and parts are readily available (not that you'll need many other then filters).
So, if you like that tractor, go make the deal before you miss out.

I have a 1996 JD 870 with 440 loader, 800 hours and love it. I think I paid $12,00 about 4 years ago. Only problem is I move 1,100 LB round bales and I just took out the left front gear case. I think the round bales are too heavy for the 4 WD gearing. Otherwise, it is a great tractor. LaRue VanZile

Welcome to TBN:D

How much rear ballast are you running when moving the bales? To little could have contributed to your front axle problems;)
