Not crazy - just ambitious. Folks on this forum appreciate that you're doing it yourself and will support your efforts. Once you make it clear to everyone, as you just did, that you have unhitched your project from the "should I buy or make" wagon, then it's all about getting the materials, putting it together and making it work.

About reinventing the wheel: as a designer, I hear this a lot from the bean counter types and it really dives me nuts. Thanks to some losers (in the eyes of the business community) a few enterprising individuals reinvented the wheel and got the cam, the sprocket, the gear, disk and drum brakes, the clutch, the disc plow, the pneumatic tire in all its many forms, the bogey, the harmonic balancer, the list is as long as your immagination. So, no more appologies for reinventing the wheel, but just remember to post pictures when you do.

Good luck with your project,

-Jim

Hey BabyGrand:

I have a stock reply to the bean counters and it shuts them up every time. Ask them if they know what a bicycle is. It was invented over 100 years ago and is still being reinvented by people that make huge amounts of dollars doing it. So reinvention is a good thing. Automobiles are another example. I'll be they don't drive the same car they had 20 or 30 years ago.
Bean counters are alwayss looking backwards.....that's why their a pain in the neck:D:D

I think this is a great idea. First, the grey market tillers are great bargains and work fine as-is, as long as proper care is taken when using them. Converting them to a two bolt tine is an excellent idea as well. These tillers can be bought for $200 w/o tines and $3-400 with.

Where exactly can I buy a 6 foot tiller without tines for $200? I'd sure like to pick on up.

Thanks.

I'm in the process of rebuilding one of the hydraulic cylinders on my Rhino front end loader and the cylinder has a spring pin that holds the cap on the end of the cylinder that is so rusted I can get it out. I have PB'ed it to death with penetrating oil, I have gotten the cap to turn in the cylinder but I still can't get the pin to budge. Any suggestions ? is there a way to post pictures with these verbal entries ? I can talk much better with photo's.
Thanks for the pep talks fella's ... I'm just going to ignore the *** hole who wrote that survey and the *** hole who authorised it too.

When my PTO shaft was stuck i the same ; I used PB blaster as you ; but then followed it up with a slow heat with a propane torch. After about 5 minutes of heating and a good slug with a mallet it popped out. G'Luck and looking forward to seeing pictures of your tiller!

Got a pic? See below...( sorry for the quality, it's kinda late here) That is a $150 47" tiller. I did put tines on it, a dealer in Mo gave me a load of used ones for free! It needs sand blasted and painted but works very well as is. I also have another identicle unit to this one w/ tail wheels.
Never seen a 6' rice tiller. They are usually between 1200-1400MM ( 47-55" approx) but I do know they make larger ones, they just rarely make it over here in containers.

Find a grey market dealer that buys B and c grade tractor. Almost every container tractor comes with a tiller and they are in like condition to the tractor. A seller who is buying the lower grade tractors will have some of these tillers, I guarantee it. There is a seller on ebay that always lists a lot of them in the late winter/spring. He will have some cheap junkers and some nicer units, pretty sure he is located in Calif. I have bought several cheap tillers from Smitty's Tractors in Walnut Hill IL but he has moved into selling heavy equipment almost exclusively so don't know if he could help you or not.
There are 2 grey market dealers down around oxly Mo that used to get some cheap tillers. Can't remember either name off hand..try googling tractor dealers in oxly Mo area. Used to be lots of dealers on the west coast ( heck, everywhere for that matter)...do some searches for them. Hope this helps.

I would imagine that this refers to a dealer which sells gray market tractors.

Grey market tractors are graded by condition. A would be a low hour original unit in very good condition. B being a decent unit..mechanically OK, higher hours with some cosmetic wear/damage, C is more on the questionable end....maybe not exact but you get the idea. I will admit it may be harder to find these units than it once was. I have been told that the dollar/yen situation has made the grey market tractors less of a bargain than they used to be and fewer people are importing them for this reason. Plus it appears like a lot of the junkers are going to the Vietnam rebuild market. That said, there were tons of these tractor with tillers imported over the last 10-15 years and these tillers are out there. I have seen quite a few listed on ebay as mentioned before. I think the best place is to contact grey market dealers though and see what they have sitting out back.
