I changed the front end oil in my 3320 at 137 hrs. and the oil I drained out apeared dark and cloudy. There did not appear to be any machining chips in the oil but I was able to use a magnet and get some metalic sludge. After a call to the dealer we agreed I would redrain the fresh oil after 50 more hours and check it again. Any thoughts on a good way to try to filter the oil to segregate any sludge?

Hey Bob,

Your thread title states you want to filter the Low Vis Hy-Gard in the front end?

If you're talking about the front axle,(I'm assumming the 3320 is the same as the 2520),it uses GL-5 gear oil, NOT hydraulic oil.
Correct me if I'm wrong about your tractor.

the 3000 series call for hydraulic oil in the front axle. 2000 series is gear lube.

Your front-end holds 1.3gall ; why do you want to recycle 25 Bucks
of oil on a 21 Grand base unit ?

The only reason for trying to filter the oil was to prove or disprove that there are metal prticles in the oil. After 50 hours the oil is coal black. According to my JD service manager it is clean and he will not even discuss with me why it is changing color. The picture shows 50 hour oil beside new oil.

Why don't you slowly pour the oil through a paint filter (inverted cone) or a coffee filter. Your going to have to do a little at a time....but that should show any metals.

This is 3 hours in my HST ;

http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/...80869-problem-international-dry-shipping.html

The black is oxidation from original manufacture . This is why I
think it is foolish to believe this "many-hours from new is now OK"
for oil changes . The machines haven't changed , but these Manufacturers
are all on the up-the-anti bandwagon . It's the same with cars too .
I ignore my instincts and commonsense at my peril (expense).
I assume you've used a magnet for the ferric ; is there any brass in the
system ?

Not sure what that all means. I did use a magnet and found no iron. The service manager has agreed to send the oil out for inspection.
