Our airedales will not suffer a cat - so regular mechanical traps plus poison in the crawl space. So far it works.

Decon does help..barn cat would be my top pick.

Jaguar rat and mice bait is what we have been using with great success.
I made up some cedar boxes with rat size openings and nail the bait inside. I screw the top on so I can check them from time to time. The stuff is somewhat like a candle.

"How do you get ready for the invasion?"

Lots of regular traps baited with peanut butter.

I bait outside with a vitamin D based poison. I used to use a strong anticoagulant poison until one of the dogs got into it. I also use tamper proof bait boxes spiked to the ground inside a home made wood box with a hole for the rodents, all held down with a cinder block to discourage our jack Russell (he's persistent). When we get a rodent in the house we use battery based traps that electrocute the mouse, these have been effective and easy cleanup. The key is constant control to keep the population down. Just glad I don't have scorpions after reading that thread. By the way, I purchase my mouse bait and stations online, couldn't,t find the good stuff locally.

I read on here about using Bounce Fabric softener sheets placed around to deter mice and rats I assume. I tried some in the garage and I noticed a real drop in the evidence they leave behind.

I don't use poison, after killing a cat which ate a dead mouse.
Snaptraps & sanitation work for me; I.E., a mowed area around your buildings, & an aggressive trapping effort now while they're dispersing & looking for winter homes.

Good luck, I'm facing the same thing right now.

After we rebuilt our Maine house and with the walls open it was pretty obvious when the mice moved right back in. Since all the doors and windows were new and tight I focused on the basement. I was pretty sure that they were getting in through small cracks around the basement door, around the basement windows and around the sill. I plugged all the holes with steel wool and foam and set half a dozen traps. For sure their numbers are down and we don't see them tip toeing around anymore but we do still see signs of them...if you know what I mean.:(

I'll add that someone told me to set up a 5 gal. bucket in the basement with about 4" of anti-freeze in it. The glycol is supposed to attract the mice (and the dog I'm afraid) and when they climb into the bucket they can't get out..... I haven't seen any mice in the bucket yet. Has anyone had luck with this idea?

You can achieve the same result using bacon grease or lard. You just need to provide a way for them to get up the outside of the bucket. (rope or stick attached to the edge.)

Once they get in they can't get out.

The dog will still get into it, but all that will happen is she'll gain a few pounds.
