What is the life of one of those blades? Can they be sharpened? My only other thought was would a new dewalt worm drive saw have half of the mustard that the older ones do?

Dang! Harvey. If you had known you were going to enter a contest with those pictures, you could have painted that bucket some bright color and put your logo on it. But then again, maybe they won't have some snooty judge saying, "Eewwww! It's rusty.":laughing:

Good luck Harvey !! It'd be great to have TWO winners of the showdown here... I'm really enjoying the mig welder from 2008.
The rules were quite a bit different then. As I recall the categories were similar, but the "judging" was done by members of Miller's newsletter mailing list voting on the projects they liked.
I entered the log hauler for laughs more than anything else, I guess more people liked it than I thought.
What I'm saying is, nerves be damned.. you'll do fine.

I feel like a winner already. I had an email waiting when I got home. They want me to pick out the design on the hood I won so it will be waiting for me to use when I get there.
I went with basic black. My hoods get beaten up a bit and I'm afraid a show hood wouldn't be a show hood very long in my work world.
We're going to have fun. If we come home with anything more that would be great. But we're not expecting it and are going to happy with winning the trip and the tour of the factory I hope they're going to give us.
Now if we can find out a 2009 finalist was a TBN'r then we could claim a dynasty in the making, right?

I've always said there are some pretty talented people here, in one way or another.
I got a Performance series AD hood from Miller last year (on my own dime unfortunately !), I really like it. The local dealer had a choice of black or a splashy yellow "motorsports" theme. Oddly enough, I decided to go with the yellow. Not like me, really, but I AM getting older. Maybe that's it.. yeah.
It sounds like you're going to have some fun, at the very least.
I wonder what they'll have you doing? I'm guessing it's going to be a combination of planning out the job, layout, time required, safe working practices and finally execution. Kind of like the Handyman Challenge on TV maybe.
I don't like working to a time restraint, so it's a good thing I'm not involved this year. Some of my favourite project time is spent sitting down and having a beer and a snack, mulling over the next bit I have to cut or weld.
I think if it was me I'd try to polish up on my out-of-position welding beforehand, it's a real weak spot for me, and I'm sure many others as well.
I'm not one to count the chickens before they hatch, but any thoughts on preferences for the machines? I was hung between the plasma cutter and the mig, decided on the mig with spoolgun because I wanted the ability to weld aluminum. The tig they were giving away that year didn't have aluminum capability.

I've got two plasmas, two migs, and a scratch start tig torch that runs off my Dialarc with high frequency box. If I get lucky then I think I would want the tig.
I'm busy right now and figure I'll just have to bring what I've got to the show. If it's good enough then it's good enough. If it isn't, well, then it isn't.

Sean, you won too soon! We not only get to tour the factory, we get to visit Lambeau Stadium and the Packer Hall of Fame!
The interesting thing is we're only going to get six hours including lunch for the Welding Showdown. We've already picked out hood design, they've got our jacket and glove sizes, so all we need is their tools and their materials to make their project our way.
The project is the question. It can't be something too difficult one would think with that short of a time allotment to design and complete it. It has to be something that can be done a thousand different ways because we're being judged on creativity, 50%, as we are on use of tools and materials, 25%, and presentation, 25%.
It's got my head spinning.
I don't think it would be a welder cart. Gates and doors I believe have to be out. It could be a table of some kind I guess.
Oh well, we'll find out a week from today if we did good. The welding showdown starts next Wednesday at 9 am and finishes at 3 pm. The results are announced at four pm.
Supposedly the plan on streaming it all live on the Miller website.
