I just read you're tagline at the bottom of your message, it made me smile as I have a very similar tale of woe that gave way to happiness. I have 13 acres...that I picked out(smile)

Shifting on the fly is fine ... as long as youre not spinning when you engage it.
larry
I engage/disengage 4WD on the fly all the time.
Rarely stop or even slow down to shift
Shifts in and out very smotth and easy when I do it this way.
If I'm spinning I stop to engage 4WD or the Dif lock.

I assume you are refering to the ex wife..... It is lonelier without a partner, but it sure is a lot easier to have your own life without one.....

Is the system you have similar to trucks, where you push a button to engage 4wd?

I just checked my manual and it says the tractior should be stopped before shifting into 4wd.

No.
I have an older style 2001 DK 35 that has a lever you push/pull to engage 4WD.
I've been shifting mine on the fly since it was new.

That's good to know. Once fixed I should never have another problem with the front.

How come you put chains only on the front wheels?
Chains on front only because I had a set that I could cut down to fit but they were no where near big enough for the back. Worked so good that I kept using it that way.

4 WD components SHOULD be designed to withstand the full power of the motor under normal operating conditions. If something breaks and you have not abused it, it is a design flaw or manufacturing defect. You should not be afraid to use your 4 WD whenever you want and as much as you want. That being said, there are alway weak links and abuse will show you what they are. Just like reving the engine and popping the clutch will break a drive shaft on a truck sometimes, the same goes with a tractor, but in a straight pull with all 4 tires spinning, it should stall the engine prior to anything breaking or stressing. If it wont do that, then it is designed wrong. Running on roadways etc will cause excessive wear of components and tires but it shouldnt break anything.

I have an old truck with chains on the rear tires. I was going to add some chain to it and put them on the rear tires of the tractor. Maybe I'll reconsider and put them on the front.

I have to call about the tractor today as it should be done. I need it back now. I have to get my road done before Dec.

 Yes! altho there seem to be few who think so ... making excuses for the mfg and positing abuse to the machine anytime it breaks. A force machine that breaks itself within the range of normal use practices is a huge liability.

Remember only the rear has a locker, so the fronts will spin if one is off the ground (so will the rears if unlocked). Dropping a spinning wheel back to earth can wallop the components, possibly damaging something. This would be a gray area as far as "abuse" is concerned.

This is the way off roaders break stuff, not necessarily intentionally over stretching the capability of the equipment, but getting into a stuck that needs a bit more Wellington on one corner and far less on another.
