Me too regarding your engine-transmission pair. If you want a hard working long lasting machine it is hard to beat that combination.

I have the engine, last 12 valve non-computer B5.9 that Dodge used (1997 one ton) but the Dodge auto tranny with missing gear is a bad joke.

Enjoy your winning combo.

Thanks! Yeah, those mid-1990s Dodges are in high demand around here. Even early 90's. The boys at Cummins told me there's people that bring their Dodge pickups to them to show 'em off with over a million miles........that haven't been rebuilt! I bought a new 1 ton in '99 and it was one of the injector pump eaters that they had trouble with. Now that you can buy aftermarket pumps cheaper, wish I'da kept it.

I have to confess that I did have some trouble with the Dodge but it wasn't a Cummins issue. The waste gate on the turbo screwed up with less than 10K on the clock. It was a Dodge part, not Cummins and Dodge didn't have repair parts so the whole turbo had to be changed out under warranty. Of course dealers didn't stock them. It was a STARS part so they air freighted it in. Still all the delays sure messed up a vacation.

Soon thereafter I changed out the injector pump and injectors (original equipment was in perfect condition.) I went with a much higher pressure injection pump and injectors with finer holes. I get a finer fuel plume and more complete combustion (higher efficiency.) This increased my fuel mileage 1-2 MPG at the same time it gave me a fair increase in HP and torque. I have a pyro so I can monitor the exhaust gas temps and not melt anything when producing greater than stock HP for longer periods of time like pulling heavy up steep grades. There is no heat issue if you don't ask for much over stock output.

My engine came with the HD valve springs so I didn't have to change them out to get good exhaust brake performance. These trucks NEED exhaust brakes! Being as conservative as possible descending hills with less than gross weight loading I got fairly severe brake fade a couple times, nearly hit a USDA forest service guy at a stop sign at the bottom of a grade as I just ran out of brakes. Exhaust brakes were installed as soon as possible after that.

Now that truck doesn't get many routine miles on it as it is one of three. It has a service body for convenient camping stuff storage/access and a large camper on it. I only use it on the ranch if I need the 12,000 lb winch on the front bumper.

I believe he's right in naming the species of the tree (although I had a hard time in botany - too many women in the class). They are thick in Indiana as well. I've seen them in Michigan, as a matter of fact. If you want to have fun, cut some up in 18" sections and give it to them for firewood. You know how some wood splits really easy and other wood is hard to split? Well, catalpha wood pretty well doesn't split! You can drive a wedge down into an 18" chunk of it and you'll have to cut your wedge out with a chain saw!

is that a HF wedge dargo?

Here is mine, I have posted this photo before in some other spots. It is a 1973 Mercedes Benz Unimog. Has a 5.7L diesel, can switch from 2wd to 4wd to full 4 wheel lock with air lockers, all from inside of the cab. Full hydraulics front and rear, on board air system, three way dump box, and can pull 22 tons! The trailer is rated for 7k lbs. and is 16' long. I seem to use it more for other people than I do for myself, since I sold our other piece of property. No need to haul my tractor anywhere anymore. Here the kids are getting some snow from the ice rink so they can snowboard in the summer time!
