Total BS. I did a Google search using the ad's header - same ad was posted on multiple selling sites. What was curious ("red flags") about these posting was, although each used the same words and pictures, tractor location stretched coast-to-coast.

These scams are so easy to spot - like a fully restored 1967 Austin Healey 3000 for $8,000.

interesting, that same tractor was for sale here in Oregon a few weeks ago. If you think about it, if these scammers put all this energy into these scams why cant they put that energy into a paying job?

It still amazes me the number of folks that try and chase these down and really think they are pulling one over on some uninformed person selling a tractor.

I've been trying to use CraigLook to search all the regional Craigslist sites for tractors and am amazed at how many times I see the same ad's posted in different cities and states. Sometimes they change the header slightly or the body text of the add, but it's the same picture, same unrealistic low price and a different poster.

What is in it for these scammers, other than harvesting e-mail addresses from those that reply? Do they do it just for fun??? I don't get it.

A boat load of money from "gullible" people...

I wrote to someone to tell them about the scam... they saw the ad and since it was flagged and taken down... they posted that they had the money and could send it right away... I got a reply from them (thinking I had the tractor) and wanted the address to send money too :mur:

This person is only collecting VALID e-mail addresses and reselling them. So for all of you that "wrote" this scammer, well he already won by getting your e-mail address.

My IP allows FAKE e-mail addresses so I always use those when contacting people I don't know then dump that account when the spam starts.

Never ever contact people on CL that have prices to good to be true because they are a E-mail collection business.

Yeah, I can see that.

Before I realized these scams were out there, I replied to one that was local. Asked for more info on the tractor and mentioned I was "local" and would like to come over to see it. Never heard back. That's when I started searching and found the same tractor in about 12 different states for sale.

I guess they figured since I was "local" that their scam wouldn't work on me. Not sure about others, but I wouldn't be comfortable sending money to anyone for a tractor I hadn't seen or driven or at the very least, had checked out by a knowledgeable 3rd party.

I know somebody that sent a $1000. deposit for a corvette and got scammed.

Yep, and that's why they are out there. They might sell email addresses as an additional source of income. But their primary reason is to get money. How many email addresses would they have to sell to get $1000.

I envision a room full of computer terminals and people showing up for work each day with their lunchbox and loading scams all day. Kinda like phone solicitors.

Everyone thinks these people should go get a job. Heheheheh.... They already have one that pays way better than McDonalds. :)

one of 10 gagillion scams

If it sounds too good to be true, it is.

I came across this same scam while shopping for a tractor this summer. In my case it was a New Holland TC-35 for $6,000 or $7000, with a loader and 260 hours. I thought that they must have forgot to put a "1" in front of number, but felt it was worth inquiring. I said I was interested in the tractor and received a reply that the lady's husband had died and she just wanted to get rid of it. I then asked if I could take a look at it, since it was listed on Cleveland, Ohio Craig's List I expected it to be in northern Ohio. She, or whatever "it" was then replied saying the tractor was at an Ebay shipping facility in Atlanta Georgia and that the sale would go through Ebay for my protection. She went on to say that if, after receiving the tractor, I wasn't satisfied, it could be returned at her expense.
Being a natural skeptic, and believing in the saying "if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is", I did some internet searching for Ebay shipping centers. Guess what? There are none! I did find a site where they gave an example of a scam using the exact same wording but for a car instead of a tractor. I thought I would call this person's bluff and responded that I would be traveling on business that week and would be in Atlanta and could look at the tractor. Just give me an address and I'll look at it. I never heard another thing from this person.
It is definitely a scam, but it's fun to pull their chain if you know it going in.
