FEL Cylinder leak

   / FEL Cylinder leak #21
i just rebuilt one of the bucket cylinders on my jd770/70 loader. of all the o-rings and seals, only two were difficult at all, and one was downright impossible without a special tool.

there was a square edge hard ring seal on the outside of the piston that was hard to get on without scratching/cutting the seal, but it just took some oil and patience.

the really bad one was the seal on the inside of the gland. i don't know what the rod diameter is, but i think it is around 1 1/4", and trying to stuff a 1 1/2" diameter seal into an internal slot through a 1 1/4" hole is hard. the instructions tell you to fold it into the shape of a kidney, but since it was so small, it was not possible with human hands. i ended up running up to the local hydraulics shop and they had a special 3-prong tool that folds the seal up and then it dropped right in. took him about 15 seconds to install it after i messed with it for the better part of an hour.

i think a larger diameter rod would not be anywhere near as bad. this was the first cylinder i've ever had apart, so i don't know if they are all the same, or even at least similar.

The only "tool" I have used and recommended often) is boiling water. You boil the seal for about 5 minutes and it folds easliy.

We have several sets of these....

hydraulic cylinder seals, gaskets, orings, metric seal, lathe cut, teflon oil seal, machined seals

Not impossible without them......use a long slender needle nose pliers and grind and polish both prongs till they are round and smooth (Absolutely no flat spots, sharp edges, corners or gripper teeth......grind, sand and polish round......

When installing, set one side in groove.....then use the pliers to grab the other side of seal, twist seal 180 degrees into the kidney shape and VIOLA.....they jump on their own.......No Heat needed......Works everytime........

yup. that's them. maybe boiling would have helped, but to be honest, trying to get that seal into a hole that is only about 1 1/4" would seem to be near impossible without those. i've got fairly small hands and my fingers just didn't fit in there.

Use the needle nose next time....we use these routinely in glands as small as 1/2 " ID...

Had one of locals rebuild all 4 cylinders for $270. I checked with Kubota and the parts alone were $230. Changed all the hyd. lines from the bucket back to the control lever manifold? Ran out of day light and have 24hrs at the fire dept tomorrow so I will have to wait till thursday to see if I have any more bad lines. Want to change out all the hyd oil but cant find the filter. Anyone have good luck with Kubota parts on-line?

don't know about parts other than filters, but I got my air and oil filters at Messick's | Dealer for New Holland, Case IH, Kubota, Cub Cadet and More | Online Parts, Sales & Service.

Well 15 hoses later and 4 cylinders rebuilt, I think I have got it leak proof! Changed out the filter and the hydraulic oil today along with flushing the radiator, eng. oil and filter. Thought it was interesting to find 4 drain plugs for the hydraulics. Anyway thanks for all the help. Need to start checking implements before I drag it into the woods in Tn.
