Buying Advice Good ole South Carolina

Don't feel bad, I have encountered the same thing buying ATVs and dirt bikes...no cap on the tax. I went round and round with state government on this, the tax people say it isn't a motor vehicle therefore the tax doesn't cap. Ok if it isn't a motor vehicle then I can operate my ATV or dirt bike on the street and not be charged with operating an unlicensed motor vehicle, since it isn't a motor vehicle. Highway Department says it IS a motor vehicle/ Tax Department says no it ISN'T.... :confused2:
The gov. should not be able to classify something simply to suit their whim{s}.

Well that was kinda my point- it either IS or it ISN'T Two state agencies classifying the same item differently is wrong...

You also must prove that you have insurance when renewing your drivers license, when the fact is that you don't even have to have a car to have a drivers license.

found this on the DMV website-

"Current South Carolina law requires that at the time a driver's license is issued for the first time and a driver's license is renewed, drivers must certify on the driver's license application (DL 447) that they are insured by an automobile liability policy. If an applicant does not own a vehicle or a vehicle is not in the household of the applicant, the applicant can check off on the application accordingly. The applicant declaring liability insurance certifies personal automobile liability insurance and not liability insurance of an employer. "

I feel your pain. I had to cough up 8.5% retail sales tax on my new John Deere here in Oklahoma a couple of months ago. Would have been no tax if I farmed for a living, but if you're a farmer here you have to be filing special farmer state tax forms every year and have a farm tax exemption number, so it's a little hard to get around it. I just gritted my teeth and paid the tax. When we settled up the dealer asked for my farm tax number, and when I didn't have one he asked if anybody in my family had one, and when I said no he just shook his head and apologized as he added $1300 to the bill.

I'd have been about $600 ahead after paying shipping if I'd had a new Kubota in the same price range shipped in from Barlow's, but life isn't fair.

Most states would still make you pay the tax if they find out...I know SC will, plus a penalty for trying:cool:

I bought my tractor from my nephew, therefor there is no paperwork on it. I didn"t know there was property taxes on a tractor, and I don"t plan on asking any questions about it. I am gonna hide it back under my carport right now. lol zman ;)

No property taxes on them in SC...yet. Don't give 'em any ideas:p

Sorry I got off track a little.

I think it would work better to have liability insurance coverage based on a drivers license and have collision coverage on the vehicles. The reason is that you can only drive one vehicle at a time, but if you own three you pay for all of them even if they are sitting.

Also there is not any property tax on commercial vehicles over 26k GVW.

I owned at one time 4 motorcycles...I tried unsuccesfully to find some type of policy that cut me a break since I could only ride one at a time..didn't happen.
I'd like to maybe have a bunch of motorcycles but just can't justify the insurance on all of them...still have 3 and 2 haven't been on the road in years but I keep the insurance up to keep the tags...if I let the tags lapse I probably couldn't get them re-licensed..they are dirt bikes converted to be quasi-legal and can't be licensed now if bought new.
