How many spare shear bolts for MF 2360 snowblower?

Hi, can anyone suggest a good number of extra shear bolts to have on hand for a MF 2360 snowblower? I just took delivery on mine :licking:, and no spares were provided. I see there are two bolts on the auger shaft, and one on the fan shaft. I have a gravel driveway but will be careful to pack down the first snow before using the blower, so hopefully I can avoid picking up too many rocks. I was also wondering, do the shear bolts ever fail just working snow? Thanks--Scott.

I always make sure I have at least half a dozen of the auger shearpins, they break first in my experience. A couple of fan shearbolts should be OK.

I've fashioned a small box that I can carry in one of the BH footwells that contains a small hammer, the 7/16" ratchet & wrench combo, spare shearpins, and a drift punch- sometimes that may be needed to remove the broken part of the shearpin. (On the other hand, sometimes it just falls right out!:thumbsup Also a couple of paper towels/rags to wipe grease off your hands....

Sometimes I go weeks without breaking pins, sometimes a couple of 'em in an hour!:laughing::laughing:

irvingj summed it up well.......I generally purchase ten at a time. I've had an auger pin break clearing a crusty very dense snow bank once but the majority of breaks are due to rocks.

Just remember-you cannot run a 2x8x4ft long piece of your sidewalk thru the blower--shear pins do NOT shear, just drive chain and gearbox case will break!

It is up to you. Figure out how many bolts you plan on breaking, then add one to that number.

I buy them by the dozen. The tractor has way more power than the blower can handle. You don't even have to hit anything, a aggressive run through a big drift will break the fan pin. The auger pins not so much.

Had to get some more recently... found I'd been using auger pins --the ones with two grooves cut in them-- in the fan (OOPS!). They don't last long!

What I wanted to pass on: my closest M-F dealer is an hour-plus drive away, but I have a Kubota dealer much closer.

We all know that RAD Technologies in Canada makes these blowers for M-F, Kubota (and New Holland, too, IIRC)... and Yep! Shear pins are the same. And in my experience, Kubota prices are also far more reasonable.

I've had Kubota Micky Mouse ROPs lights on my 2310 for at least 8 years now (about 1/3 the cost of M-F lights), and I used Kubota bearings in the blower when I overhauled it a couple years ago.

When I had a 3-point blower I would usually go thru a single shear pin on the first time down the driveway, for the season. A blower won't handle pine cones, large chunks of ice, big rocks or wood fence posts so well.

I will be something a whole lot more expensive if it's not the shear pin.

Generic bolts at the hardware store are cheaper than proprietary bolts from a dealer. I am not familiar with RAD shear pins. If they have two groves, I would start with grade 2 at the reduced diameter. If they bend when they fail, drive them out with the drift and either increase the diameter or step up to grade 5 which should be more brittle. (My blower, which has a 40-hp limit specifies 1/4-20 grade 5.) Once you know what works, buy them by the hundred.
