I agree.. the 8n was a good nostalgic tractor.. but.. even though i own one.. I'll never really use it again.. the later series tractors are so more capable.. the 3000 vs an 8n is like comparing a vw bug to a f150 truck.. :)

that's quite absurd!

even if it was a twin stick 6 spd with non live pto, it gives you more ranges and ground speeds than an 8n. the 3 cyl engines are very good.. and for hp.. that upper 30's 3000 is much more machine than a N, NAA, or 6XX series.

better rear axle, better hubs, WAY better live hyds and lift capacity, way easier to get hyd remotes, way newer than the newest 8n as well.

heck.. i'd go for a 4spd 3000 over an 8n -any- day.. even one with a hokie holley carb. it's just way more machine in not much bigger package.

not much on a 3000 that is not BETTER than an 8n...

I don't like the 3 cyl gassers either.. but for 3000$.. that's N teritory money.. and if the holley carb is junk.. toss it, pay 300 bucks and get a zenith.. it will be less fuel efficient.. but it will turn a wheezing underpowered gasser into a workaholic in as long as it takes to connect the carb to the manifold and reconnect the fuel line..

I finally bought the tractor last week. I decided to go for it considering the low price. I have since found out a few problems though.

-there is a minor crack in the exhaust manifold (you could see on my previous pics, black carbon on the oil filter.) I beleive its an easy fix with a new gasket and manifold, but how hard will it be to extricate the old manifold? Will I have trouble unbolting it since its pretty dingy looking and rusted? Any tips?

-the fan belt is loose/worn. It is dancing around too much and will be replaced, but I have noticed my battery is dieing too. Could the loose belt be the culprit for my battery dieing, as it may not be spinning the generator properly enough to keep it charged? I know it was some adjustment, but a new belt is in order.

- The fan shroud has been damaged before and trimmed back, but thats what you get from a 40 year old tractor I guess. Things happen.

-major scare with the coolant in the radiator! I stuck my finger in the radiator and it was really rusty/brownish in color (looked like expresso). Anti-freeze was virtually non existent. My first thought was an internal crack in the block. I called the seller immediately and he claimed no knowlege of it. He said he had not noticed anything as he had acquired it from a trade. I find that hard to believe, but after a series of flushing out with water and running for a few minutes, it cleared up. I remember checking the oil several times before I bought the tractor, and it was a usual color for diesel engines (blackish). Seeing the chocolate milk colored water sent thoughts of coolant/water mixing with oil and vice versa. I began checking the oil several times through the flush process and it did not indicate any coolant/water contamination in the oil reservoir. I could tell the water pump had been replaced recently. The radiator was in great condition, no repairs or damaged fins. I called the seller back and told him it cleared up, but the substance looked like some sort of stop leak to me. He finally confessed to replacing a freeze plug but that was it. Why didn't he tell me this to begin with? Could the previous owners have used some sort of stop leak to plug the leaky freeze plug? After replacing the water pump, could they have filled the radiator with just water and no antifreeze causing rusting in the coolant channels? If there was an internal crack in the block, I assume there is only one way to find out, so I hope i don't have to go down that road. This remains a mystery, so I will be watching this like a hawk.

thanks in advance for your help

since the fan belt runs the genny.. i would sure replace it.

as for the water / oil issue.. jsut keep an eye on it.. all you can do at this point.

keep an eye on the freeze plugs too.. if one was old enough to go.. all of em are..

Sounds more like the seller (or repairer) was just cheap, didn't want to spend the $ on antifreeze. These tractors will run with all kinds of their systems at less than optimum. I wouldn't worry about the cooling system being corroded unless it runs hot.

for sure cheap if they only replaced the 1 freeze plug.. why not do all of them.. they are not much $$

just bring your big trailer and your wallet---bet you run out of money before we finish getting all those $3000 gassers on your trailer:)---they are cheap in southwest louisiana and east Texas---they prefer diesel 8 speeds or new Kubota's for a couple hundred a month for use in their food plots and rotary cutter work
