I am looking for recommendations on rear mount snowblower brands. I've got a 50HP PTO tractor and a hardpack/gravel driveway.

Most shops in the area stock Meteor - I've yet to hear anything good about them, although I suspect that if you know what you are doing, anything will work OK. If price is no object, get a Lorenz - Chappell can get them and they are nasty-looking. Otherwize, most brands are fine. Most designs are pretty similar (except Lorenz), and almost all brands are made in Canada. Look at weight for a given size - heavier is generally better. More blades are better for the 2nd-stage fan (4 vs. 3). You also have to choose between manual chute controls or hydraulic. Hydraulic is nice if you have the remotes. Each dealer carries a few different brands - if you are buying new from a dealer, it's probably more a function of what is convenient. If you are buying used, then it's just what you can find. I found a 6' Econor used in pretty good shape for about 1/3 the cost of new. I had to do a little work on it, but hopefully normal maintenance and common sense (like clearing rocks, sticks, bicycles, etc. off the driveway BEFORE the snow flys) will keep it in service for many years.

You'll want at least a 6' blower - your tractor can handle that easy and can probably do 7'. Make sure it is wider than your rear wheel track by at least a few inches on each side.

Look used, lots of 'em out there.

The Canadian ones are solid Buhler/Farmking, Schulte, etc.

Definitely get 6'+ in size.

I've got a Erskine (Quick Attach) rear pull. Love it, Made it the US, Built like a tank, No sore neck. You pay for them but in my opinion well worth it.

willdwillie,
I was talking to the Erskine factory rep this past Tuesday about the 781 rearpull blower. Glad to hear that you are satisfied with it. I am planning on buying one for next year if a snow push isn't enough.

I agree with points above that a lot of rear blowers are similar and should work ok. Quality usually goes up with blower weight. Fifty pto hp will handle a 7' blower easily. (I've always figured about 6 hp per foot of attachment width - both for mowers and blowers)

I have had a 76" Meteor for 12 years and have only good things to say. Well built, simple design, easy to maintain.

Only problems I have had were operator errors and were easily repaired.

My $0.02

I also own a Meteor snowblower...ran a 60 inch for 7 years..switched to a larger tractor and a 75 inch meteor with hydraulic chute rotation a few years ago...have never had a problem yet (knock on wood)
