Tractor stuck in field, rite of passage? :)

I decided to hook up the bush hog today on the back of the MF35 and test it out in the fields to see whether or not it was a wise purchase.

It was going great, I was chewing up and spitting out all the 5' long grass, saplings and such.

I've taken this route a couple times the few days, just because I was kind of
getting used to how the tractor (my first) would handle the property.

On the way out of the same path I took in and then it happened, my tires were buried half-way. The ground was more water than mud in that location, even though it's a high point.

After about an hour of trying to get her out by putting large rocks, gravel
and long grass to try to both give a footing and support to the tires, I finally gave up, she was sitting on her frame.

So, I took the eventual walk, right down to my neighbor who loves and collects Belarus tractors, if he could do me a favour :) He was more than
willing and we got it out.

There really isn't a point to this story beyond, I think I'm going to need to get myself a winch.

Having a winch is one thing.
Having enough cable to reach the nearest substantial tree (in the right direction) is quite another.
Having "ground tackle" could remove the need for an appropriately placed substantial tree and very long cable.
Shorter cables store less energy before they snap, so a short cable to a good ground anchor can be a very good thing.

BTW, back the way you came is usually a better choice than straight through (-:
A winch on the back can therefore be a better choice than one on the front.

Transit: Yeah, I'm starting to look for a big enough inner tube, perhaps with duckies painted on it. :)

Thomas: Thanks :)

Jimmyj: Hah, the lure of wanting to travel every inch of the property.

beenthere: Good advice :) In this case the ground didn't seem soft or unmanageable, it
was used a few times lately with no rain.

buck12: He snowblows my laneway (which he will still do, since I don't have a snowblower
and don't want to screw around with a blade). So, I always try to stay on good terms.

Johndeere3720: I want one!

Harvey9: I was sooooo tempted to.

Reg: I was thinking about something that would allow for me not to need another tractor as well.
Thanks for giving it a name (ground tackle).

Just after I bought the tractor last spring I thought I would see how the tractor would look stored behind the garage so I drove in there (knowing it is always soft ) and sure as **** it sunk down to the axles. We put 2 X 8's wedged under the wheels to get it up and out. Yes I had to drive it all around the 2 acres but so far have not got stuck.

I know it isn't a thing anyone wants to PLAN FOR, but it is better to have a plan and not need it than..... well, Y'know the rest of that statement (-:

"Ground tackle" is the term sailors use for anchors, rode and such.
It is the NATURE of a decent anchor that the harder you pull on it the deeper it will tend to bury itself, as long as the pull is horizontal or at a shallow angle to the sea bed - OK so far, but at some point you want it out of there, so there is an angle at which it will pull out.
Basically as you first winch the boat towards it it will hold, as the rode gets more towards vertical it will release.
Knowing this sailors have a few feet of chain to sit on the bottom and keep the pull horizontal, you probably want something similar, because part of the problem with pulling tractors out is that they often need a bit of LIFT to get out of the hole their owner just dug with the tires, so to get a vertical force component requires taking the cable up and over something close to the tractor, then out and down close to the ground.
20 or 30 ft of 3/8 chain can help a LOT with holding things down close to the ground at the other end.

Bahh, I just forgot the term I wanted to use.
It CAN happen that an anchor gets stuck, i.e. will not pull out.
The solution to that is to have a line tied into the back of it, there is a special (nautical) name for that,,,
Ayway, a few feet of lighter chain should do it in case you get the anchor really stuck under something and have to pull it out backwards.
MOST anchors have a place to shackle a pull out chain to.

If I remember correctly it's called a trip line. Generally used in locations with very rocky bottoms.

Don't know about the MF35 but my MF135 with 48 inch tires has about the same ground clearance as my 12hp Kubota with 20 inch front and 26 inch rears. I have not been stuck in the mud yet, but have high centered the differential a couple of times. Hi-lift jack worked.

Everybody gets stuck if they use their tractor. Part of the fun.

Been stuck many times in the lower fields on my farm when we get lots of rain. I take the FEL and use it to push myself backward untill I am unstuck. I got stuck in June in a spot that never gave my dad or my granddad any problems. Just a lot of rain the first part of he summer and the fields were sloppy. So if you drive it you will get stuck.
