Nice tractor

Shoup sells them, but they don't have the "4020" decal on them.

Looks like Shoup has most of the things you need to dress this 4020 up nice. I would buy the side name plates in the set too, finishing the tractor out correctly. Going through the mechanicals first then painting up correctly should make this a nice tractor with a much higher value.

deerefan,
So you ordered a new set of rears? If so I would take the time to make sure the rims are in good shape and repainted before mounting the new tires. From the looks of them the wheels in the front are new replacements.

Yep, thats the plan. I will store the tires until I am ready. The wheels in the front are new, about a year old. I showed the tractor to dad yesterday and he said it makes him want to go back to farming. It seems these tractors are legends in some parts.

deerefan,
I would do the same and store the tires too. A little use and running time will expose any leaks that need fixing and other mechanical issues to resolve. That gives you time to gather the parts to renew the sheetmetal and trim.

You should be able to get alot of use from this tractor on 50 acres if you do very much with it. There is always an improvement to be made somewhere.:D

I bought it mainly for 3 reasons. First, the loader. I need it to move some gravel and dirt to a few spots of erosion on the property. Secondly, I need to revamp my pastures this spring and will be pulling a 7 ft seed drill with it and need the rear remotes to run the drill. I will also be pulling a heavy spreader cart with it when I top dress my pastures. Last, I own 2 other tractors, a 2005 JD 5103 and a 1952 8N. I use these mainly for bushhogging and really hate swapping implements, especially in the dead heat of summer right in the middle of bushhogging season. It will be nice to be able to put my boxblade on the 4020 and leave it until spring. Also, its nice to have a backup to the 5103 if ever anything goes wrong. The sad thing is if I put 50 hrs a year on the 4020 I will be doing plenty. That is why buying an older tractor did not really bother me.

really nice and they are legends here. Now you can get you a 10-15ft. bushhog and speed that task up a little. Be in the heat even less.

I think if you fix up the 4020 nice you may wonder why you have the 5103.
I bought the new 4520 because there is a huge difference between the smaller cut units and the older 820 utility tractors. When looking at the larger utility tractors such as yours there isn't that much difference in operating ease. I can say that if I buy something larger than the 4520 I would skip over the 5XXX machines and go with a 6XXX or preferably a good deal on a 4020.

Thats one nice 4020. There is one down the road from here with a full cab that i have really thought of buying and restoring but one project at a time. It has a bat wing on it but no FEL, atleast i could mow for the farmers around here. Anyway, congrats on that classic machine, it shall serve you well.

Some say that is the best tractor that JD ever made. The 4020 is probably the most sought after tractor in the JD line up there is.
