S&H Green Stamps ... completely forgot about those, brings back fond memories of Mom's weekly trip to the local A&P for groceries in the 50s. The high point of her week was getting those stamps! :)

How about those stamps you bought at the post office and put them in a book and when filled they gave you a savings bond? I barely remember that but remember my grandma taking me there each week.

I didn't know there was a cost to the retailer for those trade stamps.

I've forgotten how many stamps you pasted into a "book" to trade in (maybe 1200?), but we bought "books" with 5000 stamps and paid $140 for 10 of them ($14 a book). If you bought fewer than that at a time, they cost more. I could never understand why some businesses would only buy one or two at a time and pay $16 or $18 each for them.

It was a great deal for Sperry & Hutchinson for several reasons. If every single stamp had been redeemed, they would have been selling the merchandise at full retail or better. Of course, all stamps were not redeemed. And Sperry & Hutchinson got their money before they had to buy the merchandise.

Several times, when we needed something, such as a typewriter or appliances, I checked what it would cost us to redeem enough green stamps to get one versus going to a retailer and buying and even though we were getting the stamps at the lowest cost, we could always go to Sears, Montgomery Ward, or some similar store and buy the product cheaper at full retail.

I had a Uncle the worked at Brown and Williamson in Louisville, Ky. He was big on saving Raleigh coupons from that brand of cigarette. Ken Sweet

Ken, I once arrested a fellow who had burglarized a car and had a whole bunch of those coupons, rolled up with a rubber band around them, in his pocket that he had take from the glove compartment of the car. In fact, the car owner's detailed description of the number of coupons, the rubber band, etc. was the best evidence I had.

hopefully 11/2/2010 will be a start...we have to send a message that it's not just the economy..but that it's the overall policies and directions that America has been (recently) MISLED down...right now the only light at the end of the tunnel is train coming full steam..we need to send a mandate to prevent a train wreck the likes of which most Americans have never seen...

The part that scares me is what weight does a vote pull, especially when it comes to $$$$$$$$$$$ signs. Plus to add to the garbage how do we stop the career politicians that have so much power, and influence over those that come in new?

Thanks for that link I know as a kid I think it helped 'train' me to save.In this day and age. not many banks have kids accounts anymore. I do have one bank that does here and I am more than happy to let them use my money.lol
I think the fact that they continue with the kids accounts says something about a bank..

"Term Limits" is the only way...and unfortunately it will be very difficult to even get this (term limit referendum) on a general electorate ballot...

There is way through the use of petitions...they have been used in some states to get laws passed that legislators refused to address but then again getting the organization required to see something like that through involves using the same people (lawyers) that are mostly opposed to such legislation...

returing the government to more of a "for the people" is a step in the right direction...but lately we have been misled in the opposite direction...

the only way is to remove the apathy and ignorance that is such a large part of the general electorate...
