Not true. Of course a bump cap will not provide the level of protection of a hard-hat, but it does provide some. I doubt you'll be gloating to your wife that the thing saved your life, which it likely won't, but it will liekly prevent soft tissue injuries and stop those types of hits that hurt like **** but do little damage. Not a waste of money at all. Using your reasoning you wouldn't recommend someone where gloves while chipping and other activities because they won't save your life. A cut head is no less troublesome than a cut hand.

Dont know about that. I have bumped my head on a few sharp corners that a soft hat would have not protected me from.
That SOME can lead into a false sense of security. Gloves, maybe yes and no, gloves are protective from bangs and scraps, and can catch in a PTO.

The bump caps I'm referring to are lined with ABS, they do help and are a level of protection over not wearing one at all, to deny such is utterly senseless.

Ignore what I'm writing, it would appear you're mostly there anyway. Pretty simple concept, hard-hat = good protection, ABS lined cap = not near as good as hard hat but better than nothing at all and likely adequate for most jobs where falling material is not a hazard. If I were operating a tractor in the woods I'd definitely wear a hard-hat due to falling material and whipping hazards. For most yard activities I feel comfortable with a lined cap. If you want to somehow imply wearing an ABS lined cap doesn't offer any protection relative to wearing nothing at all you're just being unreasonable.

I have and do wear my Stihl chain saw helment when working in the woods. Not always just depending on what I am doing.

$25-50 I paid for the was cheap when I bought it 12 years ago.

Some semi reasoned sanity at last. In only extremely rare tractor situations will a bump or hardhat save your life. Against the vanishingly rare penetration injuries - often yes. .. Against the slightly more common heavy whiplash that will break your neck - universally no. .. Against a little pain from a hard smack - often yes, but may catch the hat and harm you more than pain. Wearing a hardhat is a chore having negative influence on the tractoring experience. What to do. ... Even staying inside is dangerous.

I have an open-side Curtis cab on my woods tractor. That thing will spring-load some branches going forward OR back. And it'll rake your face, or arm if you raise it for face protection, through the open "door". It also prevents a lot of stuff from hitting your head, though, so I'm happy to have the roof part, at least.

Like others, I often wear my chainsaw helmet on and off the tractor when cutting/clearing. It's hard to forget the stinging or eye scratches. And when you're a bit off-balance getting on board, it's the helmet that hits the roof!

When you're scratching past a branchy obstacle it's hard to keep control of everything else, like lowering loader or winch, avoiding stumps, etc. It's almost like (from what I hear) driving with a cellphone.
