Baby Pig. Now What?

That's pretty interesting Firefighter, Earplug. I never knew about nose rings for hogs. I only thought they were used on cattle, (bulls and such).

Funny thing, in the big city I see people wearing them too...

I work in a school and our Secretary's son has a lot of piercings. When I say a lot, I mean a lot. Probably 20 or 30 that you can see and others that I have heard about, but don't want to see.

One day he said that him and some friends went swimming in a lake. I asked him if he caught anything. :laughing: . He didn't think that was funny. . I saw him at Wal Mart a couple days later and told him that he couldn't go in. He said why, and I told him that they had installed a metal detector. .

He works in a tatoo parlor and does the piercings. To each his own.

Oscar has been growing. His little pen was getting to be a mess and like earlier mentioned, it got to smelling too!!! With the rains, the mud was a mess, and Oscar was just making things worse.

A couple years ago, I had a job where I took out a metal fence. It's been in my junk pile and really one of those things that I need to get to clean up. I didn't realize that I had four peices until yesterday. I bought some T posts and picked out a nice spot for his new home.

There is an oak tree that is just about raining acorns. They are early this year, and there are all sorts fo them!!! I set the fence panels up under it and figures out how much space it would take, how to make the gate work, and where to put the dog house.

After setting the panels and tying them to the T posts, I built him a dog house. I had some PT plywood laying around that workded out perfectly. I made the inside of the house smooth. All the 2x4's are on the outside and the ceiling is also flat and smooth. I even caulked the seams to make it as smooth in there as possible. This is a permanent house that I can put anywhere and one that I expect to last for quite a few years. It's screwed together and very solid.

I have some shingles and 30lb paper that I'll put on it later, but for now, it's just OSB for the roof.

Oscar seems to like it in there and he's attacking all the acorns. Amazing how much he likes them!!!!

I raised registered Berkshire hogs when I was a kid in the 4-H club, but never heard of putting rings in a hog's nose. That's something new to me. Of course it's been 55 years since I raised any hogs. One of my daughters, a few years ago, mounted the 16 ribbons I won, along with a picture of the 300 pouind first pig I raised on some kind of backing and it's on the wall here behind me now.

There's been a bumper crop of acorns in Ohio as well.

Oscar is getting spoiled....I really like his new "digs'!!!! (pun intended!)

I have plans for a much, much large pen. First I need to take out some trees and clear fence line. When that's done, I'll start on the corner posts and go from there. I tend to get carried away in these things!!!!!

Considered an invisable or electric fence ??? Pigs don't care much for electric fence. Last four pigs I raises took advantage of a dead battery on my fence unit & tilled the neighbor's lawn. Got a new battery & rounded up the pigs ( that part was easy -they followed the grain bucket). I was working on my chimney overlooking the pen that week & the pigs tested the fence every couple of hours by pushing one of their bretheren into the fence. Quite comical to watch. MikeD74T

At one point in my life, I worked on developing electric heating pads for baby pigs.

One of the lessons learned is that pigs are one of the animals most sensitive to electric shock.

I think an invisible fence like is sold for dogs would work very well. Even though they sound expensive at first, think about the cost of building a physical fence, and for any large area they are less expensive.
