Every morning I look out the window and see my yard being destroyed by some little critter, every night they dine and with the damage they do should be the size of a German Shepherd.

Well Saturday morning a 6AM I awake and let the dogs out of the cage, right out the back door and guess what they found dining in my back yard, Mr. Stinky! Well one of the 3 dogs got nailed right in the face, this all happening about 30 ft off the back of the house. The smell was horrible, they just sat there looking through the back door windows looking real sad.

Quick Google search and off the the drug store at 8AM in search of large quantities of Hydrogen Peroxide, baking soda, rubber gloves ( had one left in the barn) and Dawn dish soap, thank goodness I didn't try using woman's douche how would that look to the young girl at the checkout counter!

All I can say is WOW this chemical concoction worked great and within 30 minutes had all 3 clean as a whistle with no Mr. Stinky smell.

What a morning!

This is the high skunk season for grubbing.

It is often a group of them doing the damage.

I caught one of them over the weekend, but it is tough to get their minds off of grubs right now to trap them.

In the mean time, every morning the lawn looks like a rototiller was run over it.

Do you mind sharing that recipe? We have a white German Shepherd and 3 kids that run every inch of the property, but fortunately we haven't ever been sprayed. However Im certain that day is sure to come.

What you need

Next go to a drug store and get the following, if needed:

* 1 quart (or liter) of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide, H2O2.
Use fresh (unopened) hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Hydrogen peroxide eventually turns into water (H2O).
* 1/4 cup (50 ml.) of Baking Soda
* 1 teaspoon (5 ml.) of Liquid Soap
* 1 pair of plastic or latex gloves

[Stinky the Skunk] To Use

* Bathe the dog outside or, if it's too dark or cold, in the bathroom with the door closed and window opened.
* Combine the ingredients in an open container (do not store in a sealed bottle--it will explode).
* Using gloves, wash your dog with lukewarm water and the mixture while the mixture is bubbling. Work the mixture well into the fur.
* Be sure to concentrate on the area that was sprayed.
* Keep mixture away from your dog's face and eyes (it's a harsh solution). (If your dog has been sprayed in the face, try Tricotine Liquid Douche Concentrate or any over-the-counter douche.)
* Let the mixture stand for 10 minutes or so before rinsing off.
* Rinse the dog with lukewarm tap water. Don't wash the mixture into your dog's eyes (use a washcloth to cover the eyes if you're rinsing the head).
* After bathing, check your dog's eyes. If they are red and watering, your dog may have taken a direct hit in the face. Skunk spray won't blind the dog, but it's very painful. Contact a vet.

[Stinky the Skunk] How it works

First a quote from Dr. Caceci of Texas A&M University:

Forget what you have heard about tomato juice--it doesn't work. Skunk spray is mainly composed of low molecular weight thiol compounds. ("Thiols" are compounds with the "-SH radical" attached to a carbon atom.) In industrial applications, alkaline hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is used for scrubbing similar compounds from waste gas streams.

Hydrogen peroxide and baking soda, when combined, become a "chemical engine" for churning out oxygen. That's why it has to be used immediately after mixing. The soap breaks up the oils in the skunk spray, allowing the other ingredients to do their work.

Tomato juice does not work as well as the hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and Dawn, nothing I have used does, but it certainly works better than nothing. To say it does not work at all, is incorrect.

Plus, tomato juice dyed my white dog orange, which did come in handy once. :D

I too learnt the hard way and now let the dogs out only after it's light enough out. A little hint to help the stinkies go away.....get a few boxes of moth balls and toss them all over your lawn. They hate those.

Around here, moth balls, predator urine, and outdoor lighting, have not made any difference what so ever.

Thanks for the instructions, and I hope never to use them.

Lot's of folks miss the big picture re: skunks ruining their lawn. Skunks are digging up grubs & ground hornets which are ruining the lawn. Use an appropriate insecticide & you'll have no skunks. :) MikeD74T
