Fried Apple Pies

How about if I revive a really old thread? MartyAnderson mentioned "The Best Fried Pies in Texas - therefore the World Dec 28th, 2004:" in Gainesville, TX, and my wife and I have eaten there, and bought some of their pies to go twice; not bad, but I'd have to say just "pretty good"; not quite what I prefer.

But this past week, we had occasion to go a bit farther north on I-35 and at Exit 51 in Oklahoma, we happened upon the Arbuckle Mountain Fried Pies restaurant. Now that's the kind of fried pies I've been looking for. Too bad it's so far from our house, or maybe it's a good thing that it's that far from our house, so I won't eat too many of them. If you click on their "MENU" and scroll down, you'll see the variety they make. The fresh fruit pies listed first were $2.50 each, but they're big ones. The cherry & blackberry are a little more. A half dozen warm cherry and a half dozen warm peach pies cost me $26.81 with tax. They also have frozen ones ("frozen within 6 hours of making") for $1.50 each by the dozen.

I'd never heard of the place and just happened to notice it as I was driving by on the old U.S. 77 highway.

These fried fruit pies all of a sudden started showing up at the Amish places around here. Boy are they good.
Woman says they sell almost as fast as they can make them. Wise discovery of yours, Bird, but skip the next cholesterol bloodwork test.
If fellow TBN'ers haven't tried fried fruit pies yet, they are really good. Peach has my vote.

Funny but I was thinking about these things over the weekend. I had not made them in some time. Hmmmm. I have that nice new cast iron Dutch oven. Bet that would work real well. :D

We did a short over the weekend trip to Boone, NC at the end of the summer to do some sight seeing. One day we stopped in this little place, Famous Louise Rock House Restaurant. Famous Louise.

It is an interesting place because it has been in business for decades and depending on where you eat you can be in one of three counties! Three counties intersect at the location of the building. :D

I tried the meat loaf figuring that they would have excellent meat loaf. And I was right. I also did not want to fill up because they had Apple, Peach, Blackberry, Cherry, Mountain Berry(All sorts of berries in the pie) and Blueberry pies. I might have missed a pie. :D I had the Peach and Cherry. YUMMY. The freeze the fruit they get locally. VERY good.

So good that we stopped the next day for lunch again. Unfortunately I got fried chicken which was more food than I needed and it cut down on my capacity for pie so I could only try the Apple. :D Which was Excellent.

The pie crusts were home made. Nothing store bought.

The only bad thing about the restaurant is that it is in a bend in a major road. Both times we almost got hit by traffic getting in or out of the place. The road is 55 mph until about a mile or so to the restaurant. The speed limit drops but the speed on many cars does not. The restaurant is in a bend in the road AND an intersection with very short lines of sight.

DANGEROUS but good eats. :D

Sounds like an interesting place, Dan. One of the first things I thought of, because of problems we've had in this area, is something they also listed as an obvious question; that being where they pay their taxes. According to your link, they pay the one in which "most" of their land sits. Hard to believe the other 2 counties don't want a cut (or maybe the county that collects the taxes gives the others a cut?).

We used to have an area in which the city limits ran right through some homes. Besides the tax problem (they had to pay in two different cities), if a crime occurred, it made a difference as to whether it was in the front of the house, or the back of the house, or maybe both.:D The two cities finally got together and each gave the other some territory so the city limits ran down the street instead.

The restaurant does not seem to have an Internet site. I guess if you have been in business for as long as they have been you don't need no stink'n web site. :D The place was packed for a late lunch. It must be a mad house during the fall leave watching season.

Their menu has more information on the building being split amongst the counties than on the link I posted. I think the fireplace was the intersection of the three counties. Are first visit we sat at a table that was called the "Liar's Table" which was in one county. The next visit we were at a table that was at most two steps away and we were in a different county. I think the bathrooms were in a third county. :D

It is funny that these counties have worked together and not made an issue of the building for tax purposes. The counties around me have been checking their county lines and finding that some houses are not in the county they had thought. There are some really ticked off home owners since they usually want to be the county they THOUGHT they were located not the other. It really messes up the family regarding taxes and schools.

Got a hankering for some Peach pie.....:D

Bird, I've seen that place near Turner Falls in the Arbuckles, but avoided it because I'm too easily tempted. From your link, I see they have sugar free fried pies, so we just might have to stop and sample the next time we are up that way. It's also a good day trip from the DFW Metroplex to go for a picnic and hiking. Here's a picture from 2006 when we stopped at the falls.

Bird, I've seen their sign as well while driving by but have yet to stop. If you were on Hwy 77 you were taking the slow and easy path. I take it occasionally to get off of I-35 and the rat race. I'll take your advice and give them a try next time I'm traveling down that way.

Jim, nice pic of Turner Falls. That is a great place to go.

Dan,

I've been by that place many times on my way to Boone but never stopped. I am about 20-30 miles down the mountain from there. May have to stop this weekend on our way back from Boone. We are going up to watch an ASU game.

another good place to eat is Shatley Springs... Our History

I don't get up that that way much any more. Used to go for breakfast a couple of times a year when I went to school in Boone. There is a place close to Shatley Springs we would stop at in West Jefferson that made cheese. You could watch them making it and it was a very good cheese.

Jim,

I have had to cut back on my sugar so my wife has started using Splenda instead of sugar for fried apple pies. I can't tell any difference in taste. We had some the other week, first this year. She did stop and buy some dried apples last weekend so I may get a few more to take to the ballgame Saturday. We also have some frozen blueberries from this summer...so I think I will try some fried blueberry pies too:licking::licking:

Yep, the place is south of Boone. Just watch the curve trying to get into the parking lot. Well, watch the idiot drivers when you pull into the parking lot. :D

It looks like there is a BBQ place across the road but we did not try it. It smelled good. Maybe next time.

We hope to go back to Boone next year. If we drive north I will remember Shatley Springs.
