I am having a hard time deciding which of these tractors to purchase. Been to the dealer several times and just don't know if there is any benefit to getting any of the other two over the 50 or just split the difference and get the 60. Looking at implements I'd really be in the same range of options. Im getting ROPS, 4wd, FEL.Budget fits any of the three but not burning a hole in my pocket. Have 90 acres. Cattle, food plots, assist with hay fluffing raking, loading bales, disc and plant rye. Has anybody had seat time on two of these to give a comparison? By the way I get it all done now except FEL work with an IH 385 (40 hp, 35 PTO).

Go to the Kubota website and see the list of features side-by-side.

The M7040 has some items that the others do not. They might not be deal breakers for you but they were "essential" for me and have been useful. The limited slip front differential comes immediately to mind.

You may want to do a search of the individual models on TBN to get the reaction of others. They are all great machines in general.

I've stared at specs til my eyes hurt. Very little difference in the 3. Limited slip I am taking into consideration but it doesn't tip the scale for me.
I guess what I'm looking for is someone who bought a 50 or 60 and now wish they got the 70 and reasons to support. For the little more money it automatically kinda makes sense to get the 70. Why not? I guess why not is that for me the price difference will buy me a tiller and renovator.
Never owning a 4 wd tractor how important is limited slip front diff.? Is this more important in mud or in using ground engaging equipment?
Thanks for replies!

The limited slip was very important for us. We haven't had ours in the mud/snow yet, but on our Rhino we have gotten hung up numerous times until we locked the front differential and it just walked right out.

We had our Case CX80stuck LOTS of times with 4WD and no limited slip.

I waffled between the 6040 and the 7040. In the end, I decided that the 6040 would do the job for me probably 95% of the time, although the extra hp and additional rear remote of the 7040 would be nice to have for a few specific tasks.

Important for both. You get true 4 WD when the rear differential lock is engaged. Mud, sand, plowed ground, any loose soil is easy to navigate as long as the front end has enough weight (FEL w/bucket works).

You will never regret getting more HP but occasionally will wish for more with the smaller tractors. Using a tiller and renovator will be a joy with the added HP.

Spending that much on a tractor compared to the price of the attachments shouldn't be that much of a stretch. If you buy them at the Kubota dealer you might be able to get the 0% financing for the whole bundle.

Go for it - you'll be happy you did and never be disappointed. Besides, America doesn't have Debtor Prisons.

If you can get it all done now with a 40 HP tractor then any of these will do fine. I believe these tractors all have the same hydraulic systems and FEL.

When I was looking at the M5040/M6040/M7040 I liked the M6040, but I wished that it had the limited slip front diff. When I considered the M7040 I realized that for just a little more cash I could jump to the M8540 which is a bigger framed machine. Bigger is not always better however, each machine has it's place.

If the limited slip is not a big deal and if you know you won't need the power of the M7040 then either tractor should be just fine. Your fuel bill might be a little lower with the 5040/6040. Have you compared the wheels/tires, do you have a preference there?

As to the limited slip vs open front diff, I can't comment on the tractors you are looking at but at the farm we have a M9540 that has the limited slip front diff. I personally can't say that it's that much of a benefit. I've operated lots of different 4wd tractors, and the performance of this one seems about on par with others it size. Now where I have noticed a huge difference was with a M6950 I used to run, it not only had a rear diff lock but also a front diff lock. There were two pedals side by side on the floor, with both front and rear locked it would really get out of some bad spots. With just a limited slip, once you lift one front wheel off the ground it might as well be an open differential.

We came to the same conclusion and really like the 12F/12R transmission.

Thanks to all for your comments. I would love to just jump out and get a 8540, but when I look at my "lil" IH sitting there I keep asking myself what the heck for.

Same as when I recently purchased my new truck. Would have loved to have gotten F-350 King Ranch, but settled for my second F-150 and have never "needed" more. As I knew before I'm the one who has to decide, but peace of mind going in is a benefit.

I guess most of us hobby ranchers get envious when we drive down the road to the guy with 500 head of cattle, a 100+ HP Tractor, and big implements.

Thanks for the comments I might try to get a loaner from the dealer to at least set a baseline expectation. The only other tractors I have access to right now are sub-compact or monsters. I'm sure whatever of the three I get will be more comfortable, ergonomic and more powerful than the IH.

Extra money in the retirement account doesn't hurt my feeling either. Half of the way there.
