New hole in my workbench.

I was wondering about the pliers penetrating the tabletop also. Guess he needs one of my tables with their one inch thick steel plates for a top. Got those by sending another one with a 1.75 inch thick top to Iowa for a guy on another forum. You won't beat a hole in that one very easily.

Here's a tip that usually works when removing one of those impossibly stuck oil filters.

Instead of applying a lot of force all at once, keep a steady pressure on your wrench, pliers or whatever; gradually increasing the pressure until filter breaks free.

The steady pressure will usually break the gasket loose when a quicker force will just rip the filter up.

How about a stainless steel top or just a steel top for your workbench. You can drop all the wrenches on there and be ok.

Dodge Man;

Just take your brand new Chrysler product to the dealer for the first oil change. That skinny guy on the lube rack couldn't possibly get the filter as tight as that ex NFL lineman at the factory. Then you're good to go and the work bench wouldn't get an extra ventilation hole. Just sayin'....

Many moon ago, My brother and I were managers for Valvoline Oil here in Ohio. Being farm boys we spun the filter on, gave it a good crank then shipped it down the road. Then all of a sudden a corporate representative stopped by, and informed us that our company has paid for several new motors in the past year, so from now on we must tighten them down as much as possible. Thanks to a company rule we had to put our initials on every filter and I've had plenty of phone calls, and comments from other mechanics asking me "whats up with that"?
A good band wrench or the slip joint filter pliers will take off most anything it the O ring/gasket has been lubed. Of course We had the benefit of a pit to work from, and the fact we did it everyday 7 days a week.

So, I am an idiot

How did you get your car up on your workbench? Unless I misread the note, you were removing the filter, the BF Channel Locks slipped out of your hands and punched a hole in your nice new bench. But the filter is under the Driver side wheel well, so the tire would be over the bench????

Sorry, just trying to get the whole picture ;-)
