How often to grease mower deck?

I have to admit the manual is a little fuzzy...it does say every day, but then somewhere else it refers to every 10 hours. I don't find it all that easy and it's messy as well, so I've taken to greasing it every other mowing. For me that's about every 3 hours of use or so.

Every day is referring to a normal work day which is 8-10 hrs so your every 10hr schedule is fine.

If you never grease anything but the spindles on a routine basis, that is preposterous! It's nothing less than neglect that will shorten the life of the mower. I certainly wouldn't want to buy anything from you. You'll never get equipment to last as long as those of us who grease all grease fittings on a frequent basis.

Twice a season is a routine basis, but yeah, this board is just chock full of failures on the deck suspension pivot, idler arm and drive spline. Maybe I could lube the u-joints without dropping the deck if I can borrow that 60,000 psi grease gun.

[/sarcasm]

And relax, the tractor ain't for sale

Yup, I'm sure you're perfect and have never made a typo. You going to tell me that a grease gun doesn't produce 6000 psi of pressure??? Oh, wait, I'm positive you're not perfect because you're the only one on this thread who fails to properly grease their equipment. I suppose you just have more money than you have time and it isn't worth greasing.

I propose we all put the grease guns away and all grab a beer.

I think you need to assess what you are greasing. Blade spindles have a seal as do u-joints and they require very little but often. 10hrs works here. Anything like the splines on the pto shaft cannot be over greased. I would grease them as often as is convenient. Same with all other points where grease can squeeze out and not stretch a seal.

I grease my decks whenever I can't remember the last time I greased them. What's important is that it becomes a habit, not a periodic chore.

So, after each 1 hr mowing session, I vacuum the deck parts, air blow the radiator screens, grease the spindles and ujoints and steering linkage, add fuel and check the radiator fluid burp bottle, tire air pressure and feel the blades for sharpness, check belts and guage bulbs. Tire are the only real problem because if I score a thorn in one, I won't know it for a few days.

Since I do it after the grass is done, I have a few days to fix things if a problem develops. Most problems are parts that get loose: gage wheels especially.

I've been known to do paint touch up once in while, too. All the attention is focused on finding wear, cracks, bearings, low fluids and problem hoses, before they become disaster areas.
