4120 PTO w/o driver on seat

If you follow the above prescribed directions (from the owners manual) and it does not work for you - there are issues elsewhere as others noted with a sensor, etc. I learned in running a pto chipper on my 4120 a couple months ago (after retrieving my manual) that it works exactly as printed. It will not operate any other way without cheating.

If there is a mid-PTO switch, that likely will need to be off as well.

But the log chain fix is prolly the easiest. :D

Maybe so, but he really ought to determine why the off-seat PTO function doesn't work...

The tractor has a mid pto. It's not electric. It's mechanically engaged. I'm pretty sure it was disengaged. The tractor is a hydro. It was in neutral.

Is that a 3pt Backhoe?? What model is it and did the tractor handle it ok??

Thanks

Yep, Bush Hog 762h w/ 24" bucket. No problems whatsoever. It has seen a lot of use on a buddys 4120. It's self contained(runs off a pto pump).

There is an electric sensor in the mid PTO that will disengage the mid PTO when getting out of the seat. True, the shaft going forward from the Main PTO clutch is mechanically engaged, but there is a solonoid that is past that shaft that is in a sense another "clutch".

Just recently had a thread where the wires to this mid PTO solonoid were not connected, causing some headaches until they were reconnected.

Not saying that it enters into the problem, but suspect the midPTO needs to be disengaged mechanically from the main PTO. If you had a MMM attached and running, the system wouldn't let you get up from the seat without powering down the MMM through this mid PTO solonoid disengaging the power (beyond the mechanical connection).

Here is a schematic showing the 4120 wiring harness with the mid PTO switch connector.

Ever since my JD 4720 was new I have found that the tractor will die if I get up from the seat and pull the PTO engage knob immediately. If I get up and wait a couple of seconds then pull the pto engage knob everything works just fine. Don't know if there is a relay logic requiring the delay or if the seat switch just releases a bit slow but it is very predictable time wise. Don't know if you waited at all of if you engaged as soon as you stood up but can't hurt to try the delay.

The seat switches are connected to a delay. This keeps things from shutting down if you just bounce up from the seat for a moment. Does sound like it makes for a requirement to wait a couple seconds after getting off the seat before engaging the PTO.
