It took a couple post back and forth, but I figured you out! You talk just for the sake of talking, you don't add anything constructive to the conversation, you just want to be in the middle of it!

Look at me, look at me.

Well,shield,,:confused2:So what are you adding to the conversation[other than pictures],that I'm not?

You need to go rent you a sense of humor:thumbsup:

Well, I'm gonna bare my soul again and post another picture, this time of some practice runs from today. All welds were done with 3/32" rods except the one in the upper right area. Base material was 4" angle iron, 1/4" thick.

6013 3/32" welds were run at 85 amps.

7018 3/32" welds were run at 95 amps.

7018 1/8" was run at 155 amps.

I've managed to get rid of the 7018 pinholes except right at startup. The 6013 welds seem to look better in person than in the pic, but pictures don't lie I guess.

One of these days I'll be able to weld on a hook that isn't laughable. :)

Those ain't that bad,,try experimenting some with rod movement[stir the puddle, weave the puddle a little, step it a little, etc] see which way makes it look the way you want a finish bead to look like, turn machine up and down, weld up,weld down, weld horazontal, see what that does, etc.

Thanks gauthier. I'll keep poking at it. It's kinda fun, actually.

Your original weld job on the hook wasn't really all that bad. Several folks have commented that the hook would hold just fine.

We are farmers here (mostly) and those pro welders do their jobs hours on end for years and years. It is probably an insult to their art that we would expect to weld like them after a few pounds of rod.

I weld so I can farm rather than to make a living at welding and it sounds like you do too. Pretty welds are fun when they come out that way but the bottom line is that they hold our equipment together.

Just found out tonight that the local rail car repair place is hiring 9 new welders...a little over 10 an hour. They have to pass a welding test of course. I asked my friend what the test was and he said it was 7018 1/8" rod open root on 1/2" plate. They aren't allowed to use 6010 anywhere in their company for several reasons, including their contracts prevent them.

Are you saying the wage is a little over 10 dollars an hour? Is that about average for a relatively inexperienced welder entering the workforce?

It's hard to believe that a skilled tradesman, even an apprentice doesn't make more than that. I was paid $9 an hour 25 years ago as an apprentice engine fitter.
