One more quick question on this subject. While this fix was a success, could this "gages dead" problem have been caused in any way by the ignition switch?

The reason I ask is because I could have sworn that one time jiggling the key in the switch brought the gages back. It is the original equipment.

Just for my education: Can the switch deliver power to the ammeter, and the lights, but NOT to the gages?

Not possible with your tractor, since the lights and guages are powered by the same trace on the circuit board. I'm assuming that you are refering to the indicator lights here and not the head lights.

With all due respect, there isn't any "ignition" switch on diesel powered vehicles or tractors. No ignition circuits, no spark plugs. It is simply called a key switch.

Nope. Everything goes through the key switch unless the circuit is controlled by a solenoid or relay.

It's as much the trace on the circuit board as it is the actual circuit path. Review your wiring diagram and you'll see the ammeter is between the battery and the keyswitch. It goes: battery-->starter solenoid-->system fuse-->ammeter-->keyswitch-->accessories fuse-->voltage regulator-->gauges. It would be more correctly stated that the battery can deliver power through the ammeter to the switch, where it could be stopped before it gets to the gauges. But either way, your guess may be in the right direction anyway. The failure rate on many Chinese switches is pretty dismal, the keyswitch being no exception.

Perhaps I should just go ahead and replace that key switch. It is not expensive---from another post, the ford part number I have is E7NN11N501AB. (unless it has been changed)

I'm going to revise my answer slightly.

Your problem couldn't have been caused by that, but most key switches have several contacts which control different circuits. So it is possible that the failure of a key switch could disable only part of an electrical system and not the rest.

If the switch is cheap and concerns you, there's no reason I know of that you shouldn't change it out. Just for peace of mind if nothing else.
