My L2250 is over 20 years old now, and has served me extremely well. But my wife's new landscaping business disclosed places where we could use a little different tractor on customer projects, so we decided to trade up.
Originally I was thinking about a L3240 because I think the smaller size frame is nice and nimble. My neighbor/friend has a 5240 and it seems enormous next to my 2250. On the other hand, his 854 loader is awesome.
Well, when the smoke cleared, we went for a 4240. From my POV the Grand L is the way to go--I've spent enough time on the 5240 to know that the quick attach 3PH arms, the 2 speed HST, and a few other upgrades are really nice and well worth the extra $$. the 4240 seemed like a good balance between power (4 cyl engine and the 854 loader) and price/size.
I couldn't really justify trading up for our 5 acre hobby farm, and I wasn't about to tell my wife what she should or shouldn't buy for her business, which is pretty capital intensive already what with trucks and mowers and such like. So when she called me the other night and said there was a big orange early Christmas present on its way, I was once again reminded that I had married the right one...
So now I'm in the waiting stage, with the trigger depressed but the tractor is in the shop getting some stuff done. We outfitted this one with the HD bucket (QA) with some chain hooks and digging bar, R4 tires, top and tilt, and sunshade. We also included a 72" Land Pride BB with hydraulic scarifiers. I'm trading in my L2250 with the tiny sunshine 42" box blade (see pic below). I had hoped for this weekend but it looks like Turkey Day weekend for sure--four days of seat time (with a brief interruption to do a boat load of cooking). I've teed up a bunch of jobs that I COULD do with the 2250 but I'm going to wait for the new boy.
Couple of days ago I had to swing by the dealer to pick up a snowblower and asked if I could look at it. It was sitting all shiny in the staging area of the shop waiting to have the hydraulics fitted. Wow...pretty big!
Short term I'll probably fit front and rear facing lights on the ROPS. Longer term I'm looking at palette forks and a Anbo or Borgford root grapple. And maybe a Wallenstein shredder/chipper. I plan to fill the tires myself with antifreeze or WW fluid--my 2250 has always had fluid tires and I think they are a big help.
If any of you Grand L owners want to feed me tractor **** to help me through the next 3 or 4 days until it shows up I will really appreciate it. I think I've found every Google reference to L4240s available.
