This may have been true in the early 90's but not since the 2002-2003 redesign. The 545RFE and 68RFE have more than proven themselves since 2003.

I not surprised you left them out but Dodge also has a 6 speed auto with manual shift (ERS) and Tow/Haul mode. Plus they were the first to add an exhaust brake. Who's following suit now...
They may be fine now. To be honest I am hearing less and less of failures in the last 3-4 years but like you said, in the late 90's and early 2000's they were not up to the task. Both Dodges I had experience needed 2 trannys each. Thats not a good record when I have had over 10 Fords that have never needed one and a 4 GM's with only a transfer case failure in one. Also have owned Honda, Toyota, and Nissan with no issues.

Main issue with both I think was lack of cooling. The new stuff may be much better but I have been bitten.

I won't get into who makes the best truck. I think there all the same. My point is that I don't even have the option to purchase a manual transmission. Why should I buy something that I don't like? I drive 20 minutes to work and back every day. Sure all the bells and whistles are nice. I just can't see spending a small fortune on a truck to haul rock and other material around.

Sacrilegious statement I do believe. Your shaking the basics of all them Trucker's in 1/2 ton's.

Looking at different manufacturer sites, it looks like the ONLY truck 1/2-ton and bigger available with a manual shift transmission is the RAM 2500/3500. Even the 1/2 ton RAM, F-150, Silverado, Tundra, Titan, etc... are auto only.:(

This nothing like rowing through the gears of a 1-ton diesel truck with a good load behind it. Plus it saves you $1,200-$2,000.

Try that pulling a real load up a wet boat ramp. Dodge may hang on a little longer but the days of a manual transmission are numbered. Kind of like manual windows and locks. I can not think of the last time I saw a new car with them other than a Dodge work truck.

I have heard it all now. Going to Dodge for a transmission.:laughing::laughing: The manuals are fine but they have 10 times the tranny issues when compared to GM and Ford.

Its the way it is. I personally would not own any vehicle with a manual again. I was done in 1986. The new automatics, especially in the GM, Toyota, Nissan, and Ford trucks, with tow haul modes, manual shifters, and 5 and 6 speeds is the only way to go for towing. 99 out of 100 would agree. You must be the 1 and only guy still hanging on to gear grabbers.

By the way, you better hurry up and buy before Dodge follows suit.

Chris

Can't speak for others, but I'd barely consider a truck without a manual. So much more fun and I always feel more control.

And, my mom's 2011 Cummins has the Aisin 6 in it. It's tough as nails. Tow/Haul + the engine brake. Not only are they comparable to the other two 6 speeds, but I think they're better. I know enough about the Allison to know that this is very close, and while I can't speak much for the new TorqShift 6, our buddy has a 2004 F550 dump truck, 4x4 6.0 and the older TorqShift. We use it a lot. It weighs about 11k empty, and it just doesnt compare at all, egine or transmission wise to handling weight like our Dodge.

I do feel the Dodge lacks in acceleration, but it does get up very well, just not as well as the other two. But in all non biased comparisons and in my experience, there's no other better full size for hilly terrain with its ability to stop and handle. Ford has a really nice truck, although ugly as s*it for 2011, they may have some hope in this new motor, and I hope it does well. GM had a great engine and tranny combo, and now that they have the frame to match it, this should be a great competition year for the Big 3.

I just got my latest addition of Boating Magazine yesterday and since we are in the middle of a winter storm I sat down and read it. Randy Vance, a long time contributor, did a review of the 2011 Dodge 3500 DRW 4x4 Larime. He said the truck was severely under powered when compared to the GMC 3500 he tested in November. He said the Dmax was a "Jack Rabbit" when compared to the GMC pulling a 30' 8,000# boat on a tri axle trailer. The strong point for the Dodge for him in is review was the Brakes and the Looks when compared to the GMC. He has yet to test the new Ford so I will report back.

By the way he said women flocked to the Dodge for its good looks. He said it got as many looks and awes as a Lambo.

By the way I thought the AISIN tranny was only in the cab and chassis trucks? I may be totally wrong here but I thought the 2500 and 3500 trucks with beds got a different tranny.

You're right I believe. I was wrong, I had things mixed up.

I do think that the Dodge transmission is very influenced by the AISIN however, and very durable. But yes, you are right I'm pretty sure. I was under the impression that that's what was in it, but I looked into it and it seems that way.

Sorry for lack of knowledge. But, everything I said about the transmission was true. lol
