They may be fine now. To be honest I am hearing less and less of failures in the last 3-4 years but like you said, in the late 90's and early 2000's they were not up to the task. Both Dodges I had experience needed 2 trannys each. Thats not a good record when I have had over 10 Fords that have never needed one and a 4 GM's with only a transfer case failure in one. Also have owned Honda, Toyota, and Nissan with no issues.This may have been true in the early 90's but not since the 2002-2003 redesign. The 545RFE and 68RFE have more than proven themselves since 2003.
I not surprised you left them out but Dodge also has a 6 speed auto with manual shift (ERS) and Tow/Haul mode. Plus they were the first to add an exhaust brake. Who's following suit now...
Main issue with both I think was lack of cooling. The new stuff may be much better but I have been bitten.
