kabota bx 25
I have a half acre lot mostly all graded with nice grass. 150 x 20 garden and intend to lengthen drive way and plant 30 more trees with routine snow removal. Would a BX 25 be an over kill. I currently have a JD 175 lawn machine now. Near retirement a pretty much sick of digging holes.
May also want to start a small business with machine.

Hey, Maximan, welcome to TBN.

What kind of business would you be thinking of? Where are you located? What are you wanting to do with a tractor (Tilling? Mowing? Loader work? Maintain a gravel drive?)?

The more info you can give us, the more good advice you'll get. :)

:welcome: to TBN! What uses will you primarly be using the tractor for? Implement wise, it sounds like the BX25 with Loader and backhoe, tiller, and mid mounted mower deck. Very nice machines. What is your price budget? Having a base price to work with will determin whether you buy new or used machinery. Glad to have you a part of the forum.

overkill? Probably, but if you really just want one, go for it. People overbuy all the time.....3/4 ton trucks to drive back and forth to work, 1000cc sportbikes to cruise around on, you get the idea. Trouble is, once your work is done you'll be sad with little tractor work to do.
That's when you start your business. The BX shines for small jobs the big guys don't want. Market yourself right and you could do pretty well. You won't get rich, but you'll have some fun!

overkill? maybe, maybe not. BX is perfect for your needs and will last forever on half acre lot. A BX25? maybe- unless you have space for the BH when not in use. As for digging holes for planting only 30 trees and never use it again might be over kill if you dont have a bad back. If you have contacts and people who want to use your services for once awhile jobs for BH, then by all means go ahead if you want to have fun. I know I do. I have done quite a few projects for others with my BX24 and I have 2 acre lot. Only thing I can say is if you already have something that can tow 7klbs and have a 16 ft trailer, then go for it, other wise its gonna cost alot money to get started.

Radioman: I thought he was talking about a BX 25. WHere did this 7000 pound towing capacity come from in a 1500+ pound tractor. He sure wont need a 5000 pound trailer to haul it with.
That aside, that does appear to be a little overkill for 1/2 acre that is already levelled and sodded. You could rent an excavator and plant all your trees in one day if you wanted for less than $500. Unless you have the lineup on business needs now, I wouldn't invest that kind of money for personal use.

Maximan, I also thought at first that the BX 25 that I bought might be a bit much (I only have a 3/4 acre cottage lot), but what I didn't count on was (a) these things are addictive, and (b) you will always find a use for it, and so will EVERYONE else you know. You will suddenly become very popular, be offered many cases of beer (resist that - ask for cash), and your friends and neighbours will be finding all kinds of projects around their properties that they "always wanted to do" but were unwilling to with their picks and shovels and wheelbarrows, etc.

I am also thrilled with the backhoe, which most SCUTs just don't have. And it and the FEL come off so easily - took me less than 5 minutes when I removed my BH to install my new rear snowblower.

Do it. You won't regret it.

Radioman,

I am in a similiar boat. I live on 3/4 of an acre and about 1/3 of that is beyond the woodline and into "the woods". The remaining 1/2 acre is grass. Since my wife and I are talking about starting a family I have convinced myself that we will need to make more useful land.

My plan is to buy a BX2360 (pulling the trigger this week, it looks like), a Super Split log splitter and a really nice chainsaw. Since I have heavy rocks and boulders all around me I am going to rent an excavator for a week to resolve the stump and rock problem. I am going to use the BX to smooth out the land and make things pretty!

This is America, there is no such thing as overkill:D

Seriously, If you have the room to store it the practical utility it will bring into your life is well worth it.
