does anyone have any thoughts on the screw type wood splitters like the one mfg by hycrack from the uk? looks pretty neat and simple on the video on their website. could it work that easy?

They show only show oak being split. I would be curious how it handles other wood.

They work good. Slow, but steady, and not as dangerous as they look (as long as the piece being split is held from spinning with the screw.

They do work and work pretty well. BUT they are very dangerous. I have used one for several years and have had a couple situations that could have been bad. Use it but, fear it always

My wood splitting needs are big enough that I don't want to do it by hand, but small enough that I had a hard time justifying spending $1000 or more on a ram splitter. I picked up a 3pt PTO driven auger splitter on Craigslist a few months ago for a couple hundred bucks and I couldn't be happier with it.

My experience so far has been that harder woods will split nice and clean, and softer stuff will tear as it splits. It still ends up split in pieces but the splits aren't as clean. I suppose the lack of clean splits might bother some folks, but it doesn't bother me one bit.

I don't think it will make any difference to the fire.
