Towing a car ... Remove driveshaft?

An automatic sidekick has a gm 3 spd in it, but I assume you unlocked the hubs and towed backwards, nothing was spinning.

His sidekick was the 2-wheel drive model, so no hubs to unlock. Otherwise, yes, we would have.

I can't remember what kind of output shft this car has and too lazy to go look under the wife's town car, but if pulling the driveshaft means pulling the output shaft of the transmission all the fluid is coming with it. If it has a flange on the output shaft and it bolts on just pull the driveshaft.

Mark where it was when you took it off and put it back in the same place.

Yup, the fluid pouring out would be my concern as well. Broke a drivehaft on my Chevelle once and the fluid poured out of the output shaft. The seal is on the output housing and the driveshaft yoke seals it off.

If I were to do that, I'd disconnect the U-joint and tie the driveshaft to the chassis...That can add another level of concern though. If the tie-up lets go, or the shaft goes through it...Trouble x2.

I'd really rent a U-haul car trailer. Ain't that much..Drive it on and drive it off. They even have wheel tie-downs built in. They are light weight trailers too.

Your definition of lightweight and mine are WAY different.

a Uhaul car trailer has to be one of THE HEAVIEST trailers <edit> of its type <edit>i have ever come across.

All things all relevant.. It is light compared to that 52 foot flatbed...

But I agree... those things are heavy!

if it's a RWD, I agree with pulling the drive shaft (at least the u-joint and tie up). Saw a car catch fire from the tranny overheating because the drive shaft was still connected.

My Dodge truck has the ability to electronically disconnect the driveline at the transfer case for towing purposes.

Had a 66 El Camino with a big block on a U-Haul car trailer....Was no problem at all. Didn't seem heavy to me. Was pulling it with a 97 Chevy 1/2 ton 4x4 5.7 short bed. Maybe there are different kinds floating around. I only rented one once.

According to the Uhaul website the trailer is 2210 lbs with a capacity of 5290, grossing out at 7500. Seems about right to me, I think my 18' car trailer is in that area.

Well he pulled the drive shaft and left early Sunday, made it as far as KC and the rear end went out of his pickup!!! 2000 model 1500 4x4 ... so he put the driveshaft on the car ... hooked the dolly to the car BUT the truck would't fit on the dolly ... to wide of tires. So he left the truck in KC and has to go back and get it.

Anyone going North out of KC to MN?

Thats too bad. What type of truck was it? Just really curious because in the last week I have seen 2 Dodge trucks along side the road with broken rear axles. The the first one had the cover of the pumpkin blown out with gear oil all over the place.
