Tearing down the old barn!

/ Tearing down the old barn! #21
We had a tree fall on my mom's house several years ago. I had no idea how to safely remove the damaged section of roof. After watching how the contractor did it, it was actually pretty simple. They placed temporary bracing and disassembled it from the inside by using sawzalls and taking small pieces at a time. My problem was trying to figure out how to remove it from the outside when you couldn't safely stand on it.

Be safe and have fun with your project.

Well, after I vented some, I called a friend of my son who is an electrician. He came right over and for $20 killed the power going to the barn. He told me I could get away with building a box over it to keep the snow and water off until I can swing the bill to have it switched over. Unhooked any wires that were attached to beams so if it all came down at once it wouldn't pull off the fuse box from the house. Now the power is off I can build the box to go over the fuse box and get back to the roof. Three more sections to go before I'm to the house. You guys were right, the sawzall was the way to go . I'm sure I'll have to ask how to get the frame apart (getting the pegs out ) without busting it all up .I'd like to use what ever is good to put up another sm. barn if it can be done.

You can't buy better quality lumber so it is certainly worth protecting and keeping anything which isn't rotted.

Last day of being off work to get my barn down.:( I think by the end of the day if everything goes good I'll have the roof off and have a space between the house and barn . Looking at the things someone did to hold it to the side of the house was scary .I found bent over spikes on the side of the house were they wired it to the rafters in a couple of spots , nailed 2x4's to the house then to the rafters, put 2x4s on the house to nail the roof from the barn on.:confused2: Now that I'm up to the house ,I can see alot of birch bark under some of the old boards along with more sq. headed nails, I'd say there's nothing been down to it in the last couple of years:eek:I'll be asking what to do next, take the second floor out then the sides ? Leaving the frame last? As far as the pegs go... would you brace each one then try and get that one taking out or what? thanks for all the help!!:D

Some pix of the pegs and how the beams attach would be helpful. Right now we're just guessing on what the attachment looks like.

I'll get some pic's of the pegs and some of what it looks like now the roofs off.
I know it had to come down , but man is it sad. All I kept thinking was how old this has been here and the work that went into building it . I know I couldn't come up with the money to restore it , it was to far gone.My wife keeps saying " I've got to look at it like now I can build back a new barn".
I'll try and reuse what beams are good and see if I can at lest put up a small one. That just might be the goat barn my wife's been wanting.

dcyrilc,
By the way how's your barn coming along?

dcyrilc,
By the way how's your barn coming along?

I haven't done anything on it. I keep thinking about buying some lumber for framing in some walls, but other projects have had higher priority.:(

Like a new fridge and range for the house. We've been living with the fridge which came with the house for 6 years and it only had two shelves in it as well as our oven died back around May or June and we used the BBQ grill all summer to get by with. Nice having an oven which works again.

Thanks for asking.
