In the mid 1950's, as a young teenager on a Georgia farm, I secretly built a submarine out of 55 gal drums and put it (with me inside) in the farm pond. I could not even spell center of gravity or center of buoyancy, much less understand the concepts, and, naturally, with no keel to offset the conning tower, it immediately turned turtle and sank (with me inside) in 10' of water. I managed (barely) to escape drowning, and thought my secret was safe. Then, several days later lots of dead fish (like all the fish in the pond) started floating on the surface. Dad drained the pond to clean and restock it and there on the bottom lay my DIY submarine, made of cotton defoliant drums. Mom was thrilled I had not drowned, but Dad took a different view.

I still have not figured how the residue in those drums killed the fish, but had no effect on me. Then again, maybe it did.

This may be one of the greatest stories I've ever heard!

Since you mention explosions, I've got to tell about my torpedo. I was about 12 or so, and lived on a lake. Turns out I had available to me: model rocket engines, gun powder and lots of water. I found out that a rocket engine is a very tight fit in the neck of a glass coke bottle, so filled up the bottle with gun powder and crammed a rocket engine in it.

I took it down to the lake and made a short ramp out of a board so I could light it out of the water. About the time I closed the contactor on the igniter (on a 3' cord of course) I started to wonder how far it would go before it exploded.

Luckily for me, it went out 20' or so before it detonated with a huge splash. I got soaked, but no damage other than ringing ears. I figure some fish didn't get off quite so easily.

I did a few similar experiments with 1/4" wall cardboard tubes- the type of stuff that would get a kid in to massive trouble these days...

I think I pretty much got that all out of my system though- been pretty explosion free for a long time now.

found a couple of more pictures, including the plow I made to help it go through deep snow, made from cutting a fender.

I fixed the broken chain and fired up the wheelbarrow to get some firewood out of the bush. It has 3 forward and one reverse.

i can't say i've had any truly crazy ideas - they all are born out of some practical thought. although, there are plenty of times i'd like to post something off the wall on here just to make the safety nazis have a coronary.

This would be unique, maybe even a whole new division of devices.

How well do pumpkins conduct electricity? If a rail gun would launch a pumpkin, it would likely cook it at the same time. The contest could award points for distance and points for flavor after it lands.
