Winter Horse Set Up

I have a hard time believing it took me this long to post some pics of the critters, they're like family members to us.

I agree about the healthy horses, the woman that bred ours believes they should be out as much as possible. She and now we believe you don't do them any favours by keeping them inside when you don't absolutely have to.

The same goes for people...

Kids who spend a lot of time playing outside are typically healthier than ones who spend all their time indoors.
Adults who work outdoors seem to get sick less than those who work in climate controlled environments.

Personally, I think it builds a stronger immune system.

Posting the pictures of the horses was well worth the effort. I enjoyed them.

We keep our horses outside 24/7 365 days a year. We have a run in shed that they can come in out of the weather. We bring them in and grain them twice a day. We also put out hay outside twice a day during the winter. We have had healthier horses since we started keeping them outside year round. Our horses also become "wooly bears" like yours during the winter. BTW, we do love your Morgan Horses. Although we don't have any Morgans we are very familiar with the breed.

Our drafts are out 24/7 as well, with access to a run-in shed, fresh water and unlimited hay (via 4x5 rolls in an O'Neill Bale Feeder). Ice storms are about the only times they spend an extended period in their stalls.

I have to give credit to the photographer. The horses are good-looking animals, no question, but she is a wizard with a lens. Talents like that come along only once in a while, I'm just sorry she hasn't done any more with it.

Thanks, Cyril... they're a big part of our life, and part of what brought my wife and I together.

Glad you enjoyed them, Dave, I think sometimes we get too hung up on technical stuff here, a little natural beauty does us all good.

If you've got some more pics of the drafts, Doug, I'd like to see them.

There is just something magical about watching horses play in the snow. Your pictures and Doug's for sure got me in the Christmas spirit. Keeping the horses outside keeps them healthy and we think the horses keeping us outside isn't hurting us much either.

Nice looking horses, Doug. I've always enjoyed the draft horses I've been around, good temperament in general. The Morgans are about as "hot" as I want to have anything to do with.

Do you have use for them other than showing? We used to hook the Morgans up to haul some firewood once in a while, pre-tractor and ATV days. My wife still rides and drives them regularly, usually two-wheel Amish style cart for driving.

Other than showing? These two are true farm horses; they'd get laughed out of the ring at any reputable show. They're being trained to pull wagons and simple farm implements (sickle bar, manure spreader, rakes, etc). I'm thinking seriously about a team of Suffolk Punch geldings for heavier work.

Have you considered using them for low-impact logging or thinning operations? We have a couple of operations here that offer the use of horses to minimize property damage snaking out trees.

I've seen a few of them at work and always been impressed at the job they do. Hardly a mark anywhere except a few hoofprints and a manure, and the property owners get the biggest kick out of seeing horses work.
