waste oil burner

Hey guys and gales
Don't know if this is the right forum but it does concern oil.Built a waste oil burner to get rid of all the waste oil I have .I use it to heat my garage.The burner works great with waste oil but have a hard time keeping the fire hot with waste hydraulic oil.What gives? are there more BTU's in engine oil and less in hyd oil ?

I have a friend that has one of those and he says it needs to be cleaned out at least 2 times per season or it will not keep the temp up. Ken Sweet

i took it apart today and cleaned it .Same thing not much heat.Do I need to mix the enging oil to the hydraulic oil to get any heat?

I don't have an answer for you... but any chance you can post photos of yours? I have not looked into building one yet... but it's on the list.

Plain base oil will work the best but often you do not see that. The oil
additives in use with effect the BTU value the greatest. Metalworking
additives like chlorinated paraffins will kill BTU value fast. I do not know
of any hydraulic oils that use chlorine or any halogens in their additive
packages.

When you say "hydraulic" are you speaking of a Universal Tractor Fluid or
Hydaulic Oil (UTF) or a typical industrial AW or R&O hydaulic oil? Many UTF's
will have phosphate esters (PE) in the additive package. The PE are used as
friction modifiers. They allow for proper functioning of wet clutches and wet
brakes. PE's will also reduce the BTU value of the waste oil. Industrial HO's
would not have significant phosphorus or halogen content to worry about.

I don't know what kind of hydraulic fluid is .It came out of my tractor transmission on its first fifty change.
for the oil burner I converted a force air furnace into one.I use it to heat my garage.I took everything apart again and it seems to be working better.Still not as hot when i used the old engine oil.I found the site to build the thing when I did a search here.I'll do another search to see if I can find it and post it for you.the burner is made out an old fry pan and a large front nozzle cap off a fire hydrant

I ve been burning waste oil and woking on them for about 10 years and in that time I have seen burners not fire at all on hydro oil expecially virgin oil. When ever possible mix it with waste oil. Also just for reference I found that diesel waste oil burns a little cleaner so to speak.
