We got the winds last night. A wierd storm which only lasted 12-14 minutes according to the news. Winds up to 70 MPH. We must have woken up a few minutes into it. We sat and watched it for about ten minutes, then it just ended. Bam - done. Weird. The news said it hit between midnight and 1:00 am depending on where you were located. It hit us at about 1:00. With over 5" of rain in the last 48 hours, there are a lot of trees down today.

Lots a luck with the military coming to help. Remember that ice storm that the east got a few years back? Well a military spokesperson said that the military personal weren't allowed to use chainsaws to clear out all of the broken and fallen trees because they had not been trained to handle them safely. So it was axes and buck saws for our stalwart army boys and girls.

Gee they get to play with guns and cannons and all manner of things that go BOOM, but not something that virtually every farmer or person that heats with wood uses after reading the manual that came with the saw. Makes yuh kinda wonder.

Just hope that we are never attacked by beavers, cuz like then we are so screwed.:)

Hope you dig out ok.

I'll be sure to tell my son (who is ducking Taliban bullets and dodging IED's in Afghanistan right now) that the next time he's called out to help civilians in a storm he needs to be sure to get chain saw trained first so he won't be sneered at by the civilians he was sent to help. In the meantime, enjoy sitting in front of a computer in your warm, safe house snickering about military inefficiency--while he and a bunch of young men and women just like him are laying their lives on the line every day to keep the bad guys out of your life to allow you the freedom to do that.

And if I sound a little offended, I am.

It has been snowing/storming for 3 days. State of Emerg has been declared. Military has been called in. 402 a major highway between London & Sarnia has been closed. Traffic in bound from Port Huron michigan is being diverted. 300 + vehicles have been stranded along the 402 for 2 days. The drifts are over 6 feet deep. The snow in front of the garage where the Kubota is over four feet deep and the 3 pt blower is outside beside a 5 foot drift. I predict there will be a little shoveling in my future. Police & plows have been pulled off the roads. EMS is on a delayed response. I'm surprised the pager hasn't gone off yet. Snow bound in Lambton shores, Lambton county

The lake effect snow has been really dumping on a few areas in Southwestern Ontario this month. With all the warm water in Lake Huron and Georgian Bay we likely see lots more before winters over.

We Grey County boys deal with that lake effect snow just about every week all winter long.:) I think it was in November 1994 that the City of Owen Sound had to call in the boys from the Meadford Base for a little help.

I just saw this comment....
And as a former Marine, I have to say a few things...

First, for just about every skill there is a training class. I got chainsaw safety training back in 92. For all those things that go boom, there are training classes.. And lots of them! And there are groups that do just construction, and use chainsaws.. Do you send an architect to fix an hvac refrigerant leak? Or a bank clerk to drive the armoured car?

Second, do you want your tax money to pay for full retirement for some 19 year old inner city kid who had a chainsaw accident? Yes, we had some that took effort to show how to use an axe...

Third, everything in the military is a training event... They do this to do it right. And yes any idiot can run a tractor, a chainsaw, and a weed eater but that untrained idiot will get hurt....

Lastly, cold weather training... Taught axes, and snow driving and for the right folks how to snow plow a runway.. But a grunt did not get to plow.

I'm sorry, the young men and women that give you the freedom to insult their sacrifice deserve more respect than you gave them in your post...
If you're not of the mindset to understand that, I'm sorry.

But as my cousin lee roy says, dem dar words are fighting words...

Please understand I am only standing up for my brothers and sisters in arms...

I will support them now and fight to defend them just as hard as they fight for all of us!

That was an insult to those who sacrifice so much for all of us. While you have the luxury to sit there in your underwear writing that diatribe, there are soldiers in countries that few of us have ever seen and never want to see, defending us and risking everything to do so.

I can't imagine the sacrifice they make. I remind myself daily that when I have a horrible day, it's a day at the beach compaired to anyone serving in any branch of the military.

I hope you're re-thinking your statement.
