Concrete floor sealant (Recommendation needed)

I used the epoxy junk from lowes to paint my floor after about 1 year. After the paint dried (I did it in winter and used a torpedo/salamander to help dry it) I sealed it with the junk that quickcrete or whoever sells at lowes/HD. I put two coats of sealer on.

Having had prior painting experience, I knew I was gambling by not truly cleaning and preppring the floor, but all in all it has held up fairly well. It lifted in some spots where I knew I was going to have problems, so I repainted a box on the floor and resealed.

It reflects a lot of light and makes the basement appear much brighter. I used two colors, nothing fancy, just some tape on the floor to make a border around the center. It is ok, nothing to put in a magazine. The chips that they sell are kinda junk, next time I would just spray paint some plastic sheeting and then after it dried krinkle it up on the floor for flakes. I used a color called relic with a white border, not soo bad. SWMBO picked the relic, not my first choice, but not bad either. Since the walls are painted white, to break it up I painted a 3" border on the wall from the floor up. It breaks it up.

Two things, the epoxy isn't cheap, and isn't doesn't stretch out. Whatever coverage they say it does discount that by one third or one quarter for a better approximation. For the work area in my basement, I bought some discounted epoxy from lowes that was the wrong color for someone. I got it for 5 bucks. I couldn't care if it was flourescent green. I am just going to trash it eventually anyway.

I used an industrial floor epoxy fr Benjamin Moore. Expensive but worth it, Tough as nails. Stay away fr the Rusto stuff.

Some types of sealers MUST be used when the concrete is first installed. They actually help the cure and strengthen the surface of the concrete. I have always used this type with very good success. One slab is over 20 years old sealed this way. Unfortunately, i do not remember the brand.

I didn't personally, but a friend who owns a machine shop did. He used it in the office and it didn't last very long at all (like a few weeks!). He knows about cleaning and acid wash etc, so surface prep was not the issue. He used the BM product in the shop and it's bomb proof (after years). So on his recommendation, I used it in my garage too.

Check out what i referred to in post #10. Its 2 step -- 1st can be used on green unsealed concrete but better if you wait a little. It is a strengthener .. completing uncompleted chemical bonds. Second step is a sealer. NICE natural surface, and not slippery when wet.

I was referring to post #6 that said it was best not to seal right away which i personally disagree with. But maybe this is like which color tractor is best, i do not know.

Using the right curing agent/sealer at the time of the pour gives you a harder surface that does not dust etc. It can also help retain moisture in the slab to assist in the cure of the whole slab.

This is not a water based sealant. It is an Acrylic covering. Very easy to mop and sweep. When I dropped some of the spray foam sealant on it, you let it dry and then it just pops off with your foot. The smallest quantity you can get is 5 gallon pails. I think it runs $50-75 per 5 gallon and is sold only at commercial concrete supply houses.
Mine was bought at AH Harris in Richmond VA. It took 15 gallons for 2 coats 40 x 64.
I had to do a special coating where I installed vinyl in a bathroom for the glue to stick.
More pictures are on my link. The concrete turns very dark when applied to new concrete. Can be used on new or existing concrete. Higher PSI are reached when used to slow cure rates.
