I dont have my tractor yet as it is being shipped, but does anyone know if you can run the low sulfur diesel in the new 2011 tractors or does it require ultra low? Not sure if anyone has their manual and can look at the requirement. I have heating oil up here in alaska and it is the low sulfur diesel and it is #1 which is required with the low temps we've been seeing. ANyone know?

I have a 3940 (wish it was a 5740!) and my understanding is that you can run either the Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel which is what most of us buy at the pump, or the Low Sulfur Diesel which can sometimes be purchased direct from the supplier. However, Low Sulfur Diesel will be harder and harder to find since the EPA has considered it to be too polluting.
But, back to your question: Yes, you can run either in the 5740. The only thing you will need to do is change your oil more frequently with the "Low Sulfur" fuel.

Heating oil / Diesel both one and the same most places .
95 percent of it is all ready ultra low.
1*You already have what you need so use it.

Here is the page right out of the manual concerning fuel for L3240 thru L5740 tractors (same manual for all). Philip.

Thanks so much for the page. I read it and looks like I will be good to go.

I'm not an expert, just somebody that asked the guy who delivers my heating oil. He has both heating oil and off road diesel on his truck and has two different hoses, one for each. While filling up my tanks last May I asked him to top off my dozer that was next to the house and fill up a 55 gallon drum.

He said he that he couldn't sell me heating oil but had off road fuel on his truck and would sell it to me for the same price. After watching him roll up the first hose then unroll the second I started to wonder why. Since each hose has it's own meter he had to print out two bills then add them up for a total.

So i asked him why. His answer was it's now illegal to burn high sulfur fuel in off road engines. Since it was still being used for heating they couldn't by law sell you HS fuel if they knew you were going to use it in an engine. Because the sulfur helps lubricate things like injectors they had to add something to the off road diesel to make up for the lack of sulfur.

Fast forward to now. The high sulfur stuff is much harder to get, it may not be even be possible now. But the problem still exists. So the dealers sell two products, heating oil and off road diesel since heating oil doesn't need the additive. Some heating oil dealers do not carry off road diesel.

I have no idea if the additive is needed for older engines because they were designed with the added lubricating properties the Sulfur added to the fuel and new engines have newer designed parts that no longer need to be lubricated like the old engines. Or if the new engines also need the additive. Since I have never gotten a straight answer if I run low sulfur home heating oil I add an additive to add a lubricant just to be safe.
